XenForo 2.0 Discussion

A lot of big sites have been moving to XF 1.5 recently. If I was the admin of a big site, I would just wait until XF 2.0 came out to upgrade. I moved my site to XF from phpbb in august. I had wanted to move to XF for months because I didn't like using my site when it was on phpbb. I installed a better style on m y site and I am going to make it live in hopefully the next few days, but I hope it gets converted to XF 2.0 shortly after it comes out hopefully within 2 months because I want to use XF 2.0. The default style of XF 1 feels kind of old, even though I am not using the default style. I just don't want to wait 6 months to a year to upgrade.

If you're not tied to a specific style or not reliant on certain add ons, you could update on day 1.

Some communities are going to have to wait for certain styles to be made or add ons to be developed before they can upgrade.

The developer preview we'll release next year will somewhat lessen the impact of that as some developers may wish to get a head start.

Next Year? I thought that you were going to release it this fall.
No, a developer preview or any sort of release was never promised for 2016. A public demo (ie one that we could try out but not install) was promised.

Q4 2016 is when we will create a public demo installation. We will be releasing a developer preview at some point after that.

I have moved a large 13M+ posts site to Xenforo 1.5 from Vbulletin 4.2 last year. The only regret I have is that I waited so long. Traffic jumped, server load and page load decreased, user satisfaction is higher etc. If I recall correctly URL structure won't be changed in XF 2.0 and I would strongly recommend sites on other architectures to move to XF 1.5, using proven importers and procedures. It took me 3 months to plan it and test it. Then moving to 2.0 once everything will be tried and tested will be much easier and most probably painless from SEO perspective.

Isn't it weird how you repeatedly state "public demo q4 2016" and people seem to think they're going to get their hands on the software download on that date.

Some people are never satisfied! Why can't you just give us whatever's developed in q4 and any security flaws, downtime or loss of income due to unstable software we'll just take on the chin? Why why why?

So it likely won't be released until spring or summer of 2017?
You can expect:
public demo / XF.com install -> developer preview / alpha -> beta versions -> release candidates -> stable/gold.

Take that timeframe as you wish but I would not expect anything less than a month at each stage so looking at 5/6 months earliest for a stable release I would guesstimate.

The exact release date of the developer preview will depend on a number of things. First and foremost it will depend on the feedback we receive from the upcoming demo installation we'll be setting up this year. There's also one or two things we'll need to finish off behind the scenes (mostly Admin CP stuff which you won't see during the demo installation).

If all goes well, it could be very early in 2017. Depending on how that goes, there will likely be other preview releases, such as Beta and RC releases all the way up until the final release. Again, the arrival of each stage of the process will depend on how long the previous stage of the process took.

I feel now is probably a good time to re-iterate something about the developer preview. You will not be able to upgrade to it from an existing XF 1.x install. You will not be able to upgrade it to the final 2.0 version. You will not be able to import from/to it. It will strictly be for development and testing purposes only. All I'm saying is, don't start trying to upgrade your live XF 1.x installs to it, or start trying to launch a new 2.0 forum on it :)

A big site is a big site because it is good/important/fun etc. It's not big because of its software, or theme.

It's like saying your a good driver because you own a Ferrari.

Your a good photographer because you own a $10,000 camera.

A big forum because you run xenforo....

I'm looking forward to xf2 but I'm not letting it stall my progress. When it comes out I will have to figure out the best way to migrate to it.

But it'll still have export functionality so we can export styles or languages, right?
