Makes sense, especially when your business depends on your website and you cannot afford to go down for a week. Either do it yourself (if you can) or hire a pro.

With "hire a pro" I didn't mean to post something like "hey guys, I need a good coder who can do this and that" in some web forum :)

But basically, you are right. If you lack the skills, it's hard to tell whether someone is a pro or not. I've seen work done by so-called "professional web designers" that would fall apart when someone nearby farts.
 
I go through rather thorough testing of any mod I install...that is kind of why when I want one it takes so long to put it up lol. This is also why you need mod_security to try and help avoid those exploits. If I find an add-on with a security vulnerability I will not install it on my board no matter how bad I wanted it and even if I can easily fix the vulnerability just for the fact that I don't want to find out that I was stupid and missed a file that ended up compromising my site...
 
Can I just say the new CKEditor at vBulletin.com is a joke. Very weird issues and after months of QA I would have imagined it would be close to polished.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that's appalled by it. I'm gob-smacked that there seems to be a general acceptance of it. I honestly don't understand how anyone could think it was suitable for deployment on any live forum. Perhaps expectations are now so low that anything new drawn in fat, bright crayon is acceptable?
 
I have to say though, not saying anything positive about vbulletin but rather about the editor itself it looks the part. Even down to the icons it feels like an editor. The one thing that destroys that is the smiley dropdown menu (I seen this firsthand at ipb 3.2) test board and it's a tedious task to pick a smiley for a post, menu closing then having to re-open the drop down menu and select all over again. I think as smiley management goes this is most definitely a step backwards. I just couldn't go without my happyplace add-on where you can select smilies at will and cutting the amount of clicks more than 50% not to mention the drag and drop option.

If I had to deal with (respects to the smiley part) it would be a showstopper for me. I'd give up forums forever if I had to endure a second rate smiley frontend solution like that. Overall though, the editor itself looks the part.
 
Any 3rd Party mod can introduce a security hole. Heck, it wouldn't surprise me if some on the web create mods for that very purpose, to gain access to hack your site.

I agree with you, I must be going mad doing it! :D

But on the editor side of things, it's much better looking than TinyMCE and does look the part much better on blending in with style colours. Better for using I noticed on the IPB test board too.

That's why i have/had to write add-ons for vBulletin3, vBulletin4, mybb & ipb for my boards...

1. so i get the best performance
2. and i can find at least the small security issues and fix them or choose to not install the add-on^^

Are there boards that run on their own custom forum software? Would be interesting to know.

Wow! You do not fool around when it comes to smilies. Remind me to never come between you and a yellow happy face. :)
I find it interesting to sit back (from a very long distance, mind you ;)) and just observe what vB as a company is going through right now. I can just imagine whats happening behind closed doors.
 
All I know is I have to get my 1 vb4 site converted to XF asap. Pretty much cutting modifications because the need for stability and core community features are the top priority.

This latest mess they have going on at their site is just sad. :(
 
5 minutes in and I'm already struggling with that annoying jumping bug that sends you to the editor every single time you view a thread. UGH!

You have to realize that there is just one Person anymore, called Ad***n ;)
The Customer is Beta Tester and QA ;) Best solution vB could find and cheap too ;)
And the best part ... IB still get money for it *censored*
 
I think the whole thing going on with Internet Brands / vBulletin is comical & sad all at the same time.

1) Invision Services has a pre-view release of 3.2, which is almost a complete re-write & includes a new editor, before vBulletin could add 1 simple editor

2) Xenforo 1.0 / 1.0.1 which was written from the ground up, was released quicker before vBulletin can add 1 simple editor

3) vBulletin 4 has been out for 2 years now and surprising still can not add 1 simple editor, but yet can announce they are working on vBulletin 5.

It's all sad & comical at the same time.
