This behavior is unlikely to change. Though it has been requested by a few people to make a visual distinction in the thread notes tab based on if there's already a notes thread attached to it or not. I'm likely to do that.
Can you please give us an option in the admin panel to only create thread on an actual reply. The way it works now is quite literally pointless, and just makes unnecessary threads by curious staff who don't know whether there are notes or not, or whether they know how the system works or not. I would very greatly appreciate this to be a configurable option. Please consider. Am willing to pay extra for this :)

PS: Thanks for the IP search bug fix!

It's a rather large change to make to the system and not something I really want to do. Even making it an option still requires all the initial work of changing it. That's why I said it's not something likely to change even though a visual representation of if a thread has already been created is likely to exist in the future. If you're willing to sponsor it though then of course that's an option. That's something we can discuss in private.

Daniel Hood updated Moderator Essentials with a new update entry:

1.11.1

Bug Fixes
  • Fixed a messed up phrase relating to lifting bans.
  • Fixed attachments in posts being converted to conversation messages. The attachments previously were "lost". Now they get switched over to the conversation messages.
  • Fixed a bug with the permission setting for allowing mods to search users by ip address.

Read the rest of this update entry...

Not sure what happened here, but after updating to the latest ConvEss, I'm sporadically not getting alerts for new conversation replies.

Moreover, when I open a convo that didn't send me an alert, the Read Date reads as if I had read the conversation at the same exact minute someone replied to it.

I guess this one will be fun to reproduce and debug.

@Daniel Hood

It only happens sometimes? That's really odd.
It happens all the time with a specific member, I've figured now.

I just tried starting a new convo with that member, then he responded to it, and I didn't get an alert. And my message Read Date Date was the same minute as the member's sending the message.

Even though I *actually* read it 8 mins after him sending it.

How can you debug this kind of thing?

Server Error Log is empty.

I could try reverting to an older ConvEss to confirm it's the new version's fault, but I'm 100% sure it is, because it was the only add-on (besides ModEss, which I updated at the same time) that I have recently updated and this behavior started right after.

Is that certain member a moderator?
No, and this doesn't seem to have anything to do with ConvEss.

I tried disabling (doesn't disabling effectively remove all functions of an add-on, or should I have tried uninstalling?) the ConvEss and the same member's conversations don't trigger a new Inbox alert.

Coincidentally, I forgot to say that I updated to XF 1.5.3 today too.

I'm totally perplexed by this phenomenon, I've asked a number of members to PM me and all of them trigger Inbox alert but not this one member's.

I'm going to rebuild Conversation and User caches just in case now.

Then after that I'm out of ideas and will need to approach the XF devs...

CORRECTION

I made further tests.

If member X sends a new conversation Y to member Z. An Inbox alert IS generated for member Z.

When member Z responds to the conversation Y. An Inbox alert is NOT generated for member X.

When member X responds to the conversation Y. An Inbox alert IS generated for member Z.

When member Z responds to the conversation Y. An Inbox alert is NOT generated for member X.

It seems conversation starter doesn't get an Inbox alert. But the other person does.

I've tried this with multiple different new conversations, with multiple separate members.

I can reproduce it.

What have I broken?

@Daniel Hood, can you reproduce this?

@Daniel Hood

I have confirmed this to be a bug of the latest Moderator Essentials.

With Mod Ess disabled, inbox alerts work fine.

With Mod Ess enabled, conversation starter does NOT get inbox alerts for convos.

The moment I disable Mod Ess, convo starter starts receiving them for new replies and everything works fine.

During my testing I had ConvEss disabled.

EDIT: I also tested with ConvEss enabled.
When ModEss is enabled with ConvEss enabled: conversation starter doesn't get inbox alerts.
When ModEss is disabled with ConvEss enabled: conversation starter gets inbox alerts.

This didn't happen before the newest ModEss which I updated today.

I have to say it felt good to found the culprit for this one, I was pretty desperate and going crazy!

Now just fingers crossed you can reproduce it too :)

@Daniel Hood I think it's related to the permissions of the forum you select for either the discussion or thread notes. I changed the forum to a public forum rather than one of my private mod forums and the error changed. It now says this

  • Please enter a value using 100 characters or fewer.
  • Please enter a valid message.
Also, the thread notes now generated a new thread when using that option. It wasn't doing that previously when I had a different forum selected.

I'll need admin access to troubleshoot this and maybe ftp access too. Can you private message me admin access for now?

Starting to get these occasionally:

@The Sandman I'll be posting a fix soon. Sorry about that. While it logs a server error, it isn't doing anything critical. The error basically stems from the visiting a page other than 1 of a thread notes thread.

Hello!
It's possible to search all IP's of user ? Like in IP tab while editing user in admin panel.
That is not currently a feature. The feature is that you can search an ip address and find all users that have content with that ip. Similar to searching users on the admin panel by ip.

If the section mods don't have Can view moderator bar log counts permission, super mods and admins can't filter moderator logs created by section mods, is it intended behavior?
