XF 2.4 general discussion, feedback, complaints, random off topic posts, etc.

Not something we’d be implementing necessarily. But might be something you could enable yourself potentially if you pay for one of their plans.

Yes. It would be great if you can just add the setting to enable the AI content writer and all we need to put is the API key or something.

We’re keeping it but, no, it won’t retain the functionality of the toolbar.

Ultimately I would be surprised if people even need to use BB code mode anymore.

What do you feel the use case for keeping it is?
we certainly expect to be able to do things like proper floats without bbcode, but it really is nice to be able to use bbcode to custom editor functionality. what would the alternative be? im thinking there must be another method, i really cant imagine exactly how things might be "stripped back" tho...

regards

My uses have always been highly optional. For instance, I will sometimes put an external quote in quote block and then go to BBCode to add the attribution. But of late, that's the only use case I have had. Sometimes it's helpful if formatting is messing up badly but I haven't used it for that in eons. So losing it is no skin off my teeth.
This is a great point - I don't think members ever go there except by accident and then scratch their heads because the text editor is broken.
I ended up doing a post in our Tips & Techniques forum about this one. Oddly, the case that prompted it was the other admin. :D

In general, I'd like a fairly simple editor tool bar. The XF one is loaded with options and I would guess that my users would use maybe 20% of the available buttons. I could edit it but I think starting simple and letting us build on that would be better as a baseline than starting with everything and stripping down. Another site I am on went the route of utter simplicity and took it too far (see below), but I think if there's basic formatting options (bold, italic, underline, maybe text size and colour), maybe a list option or two, emoji button, gif button, and button(s) for inserting media and images, I'm good. In fact, on that site, there's no GIF button, you just get the URL from Giphy or wherever and insert it as an external image using the camera button (which does both images and media). Perhaps if you could have a more capable ribbon/toolbar for articles/blogs and a fairly simple one for posts.

By the way, the editor this is from is horrible in general, not just because of the stripped down toolbar. Definitely NOT an example to follow.

If you plan to keep it, what are you adding to it?
This old editor is somewhat of a pain in the backside.
It might look ok on the new tiptap editor but i reckon you'd be better of going with the notion version rather than the simple basic version.

As an admin and moderator, I often need access to content in plain text, seeing clearly the tags and their option values, editing either one in-line, troubleshooting, etc.

One of our forums uses advanced typography with heaps of BB codes. It is common practice for the moderator to copy the plain text into Notepad++, Atom, and the like, edit there, and then copy it back to XF.

Also, some of us, admins, use tools like Post content find / replace. It is essential to monitor one’s actions in plain text when using this powerful tool.

I agree that for regular users, BB code mode is not necessary, but for admins and moderators, it is a must.

Most users are not used to BB code. Look at Facebook, X(Twitter), discord etc. They’re used to a simple interface. I think BB code only complicates things. It’s great for power users, but for the average (forum) user, we just need a simple UI.

We have BB code button manager in ACP to accommodate this need. Using it, admins can remove the BB code mode button from the editor’s interface.

Just looking for clarification. So when anyone asked or got excited about 3.0 the devs stated it is mostly the look/style that is changing, most of the features to get excited about were released with 2.3. So now there is a 2.4 with features and no style. Are these new additions (not previously planned for 3.0) or the small feature set that was to be rereleased with 3.0, minus any that may be dependent on the new style? Thanks

Ah okay. So 3.0 is still a separate feature set. So these are new small additions (that we will be seeing in "HYS?"). Cool! 😎

Yup same as before, primarily, and a few goodies I think was the term used. Doesn't matter. I understand now. Thanks.

Do you have any plans to turn XenForo into some kind of headless CMS? I might want to rely on XF for the back-end part but do the interface myself. This allows me to use the power of a mature software in the community part, but also to customise the interface according to my own requirements and the needs of the project. This could also increase the desirability of the XF.

I know XenForo has an API system, but there are more dedicated systems like PayloadCMS or PocketBase.

What is this about not supporting Markdown? No, the limited markdown support in XenForo should be expanded to support both full BBCode and full Markdown, resolving conflicts wherever necessary automagically. Easier said than done, but that would be my feature request.
