Have at it.

We’re very much focusing on backwards compatibility with XF 2.4. This will be a smaller release with a focus on maintaining backwards compatibility.

In other words, an add-on compatible with 2.3 should be compatible with 2.4.

It should not represent double effort to be compatible with 2.3 and then 2.4. It should be the same.

As ever, it’s entirely up to you whether you wish to upgrade or not. 2.2 is a very fine point to stick with if there’s reasons you can’t upgrade.

I don't think this will stop 2.3 mod updates. Swapping out the editor shouldn't be a big deal for addons i wouldn't think. I may be way wrong, of course.

I think my biggest gripe is the feature list, as linked, sorted by vote, nothing on the first page sticks out to me as super important, nor something I want or need. Maybe https://xenforo.com/community/threads/search-filter-custom-fields.140432/ is a good one. The rest - too niche, not core product stuff, too focused on integrations instead of native platform.

It’s not going to be exclusively from there and certainly not everything. And not necessarily page 1.

It’s just where we draw inspiration from as a starting point.

Awesome. Can't wait to see what ya'll have cooked up. Also looking forward to the new editor. Although I have had zero issues with the current one.

I know, but I didn't realise all the popular suggestions are in the new features???
They aren’t. He is referring to that as the “new features list”. We are drawing inspiration from that list as a starting point. He’s just saying he’s not an immediate advocate of anything specific on that list.

Style and appearance stuff is most likely going to come with 3.0 more than 2.3 at this point.

I think you should advertise the option that photos uploaded in forum posts can be inserted and catalogued in gallery categories. It is a really important option also because it makes the gallery active (and gives a sense to thread attachments) but many people do not know about this option.

Is there some kind of number you can put on that feature list ?

Some of the things we’re in more of a planning and research phase at this point so we don’t have a set list of features aside from the editor.

But we have 3 devs that will be primarily working on this and a clear target for release and a commitment not to get too in the weeds with things so there isn’t a protracted development cycle.

I guess “low hanging fruit” is the best way of describing our ethos right now. It will be a smaller scale release.

We’re very serious about it being a shorter development cycle. We’re not even ruling out the possibility of 2.5 before 3.0. So rather than adding feature upon feature like we were guilty of with 2.3, things that aren’t appropriate for 2.4 that can’t be delivered at a relatively short notice could always be deferred (be that to 2.5 if that ends up being a thing, 3.0 if appropriate or even 3.1).

Nice, I'm excited to see that. I think it's a huge leap of improvement for development considering the last years were... not so great to say the least. Nonetheless, good to hear this is being taken more seriously.

There's some great suggestions that could minimize the use of 3rd party add ons. Ones that should be core XF. So hopefully you guys pick the right ones that are most needed first and add systematically.

GG.

I love everything about this. We were told a while back about these shorter release cycles, and I was fully expecting it not to come until after 3.0, if at all if I'm being completely honest, so it's very good news to know it's already started. I'm even more excited to hear that we'll get more frequent HYS, just so we can be a little more "in the loop", so to speak, about what's happening with development. One of my main concerns has always been the lack of communication about development and this plan certainly puts that concern to rest. So, again, well done y'all! I couldn't be happier to hear this news, for whatever that's worth.
