XF 2.4 general discussion, feedback, complaints, random off topic posts, etc.

If we were doing something like that it would probably just be some brief bullet points in the announcement thread. It wouldn’t be any significant detail.

There's already an announcement thread for XF 2.4.

So, it's safe to assume an announcement thread for XF 2.5 (or another preliminary announcement for XF 2.4 with more details) would be as minimalistic as something like this?

Xenforo 2.5 is announced with a preliminary release date of Q4 2025. It may include features such as:
  • This
    • May include
    • May not include
  • This 2
  • This 3
    • Could implement X over Y
  • This 4
That would be a good approach over dropping all the HYS at once and be the middle-ground that I read into.

It could also be a way to gather even more suggestions from what is proposed, which might not specifically be from the suggestions thread, to refine the feature before it's completely designed and before its release.

Perhaps what Max would like is to be told that the next developments in XenForo will be on this or that major subject... for example we are going to review the moderation system, or the alert system will evolve, etc. his could make it possible to avoid investing in related add-ons. And it won't be so bad if XF's plans ultimately change, this will still have made it possible to avoid the risk of paying for something that will be implemented by the XF team.

Maybe send it out in a newsletter letting us know what changes are coming, etc.
You have our emails for software and license information. Send us out an email letting us know what to expect.
That sort of communication is better than posting up these threads where you have too many people complaining about one thing or another.

We linked to the popular suggestions in the suggestions forum.

Please people... I beseech you to vote for these useful suggestions:

Exactly. Or completely re-develop something because was based on some core system completely renewed in the new version.

A bullet points list is more than enough. As i said, that's enough to reduce uncertainty brought with any release.

Yes, but as Chris already said, they considered this type of communication, and scrapped it, because there is always a bit of uncertainty when developing something on a codebase like Xenforo and they don't wanna over promise and under deliver for problems that can emerge during the development cycle of said features.

Personally i'd like more to read "we are trying to include X, Y, Z" and later say "Z can't be included and will be developed in another dev cycle like X.F 2.5" than don't have any information till HYS are posted in a span of maybe one or two months i guess? Or less as Paul said is a shorter development cycle.

Please, a proper block/ignore function that allows users to customise what people and content they want to see.

Please, please, please, please, please. It's 2024. Do this for the sake of all the over sensitive people who need safe spaces and who suffer constant imaginary microaggressions... and the mods who can no longer deal with them.

Hello
I hope that the way the topic list is displayed is changed from the traditional way of forums and that topics are displayed as in content management and blogs and that it is possible to put thumbnails for the topic and have options to control the thumbnail

The problem that you'll run into by having UGC (user generated content) display this way is consistency.

One member will upload 400x600 image, another 150x500, another 1080x1080, and so on. You can only crop, resize and center so much before you're never going to have results like that unless you approve each post with the size that fits your style — that means making one before approving it if they used a 100x75 thumbnail.

WordPress always automatically crops thumbnails to a specific size, even if the size is different. This can be applied to forum software as well. The traditional forum style has become a thing of the past and is no longer wanted, as no one participates in it due to its traditional design.

That's debatable. I'd say the vast majority of existing forum users is used to "traditional" forum format and doesn't really like / want / need things to be entirely different - if you do things very different it won't be a Forum any longer.

Just like a newsgoup realistically can't become anything different than ... a newsgroup.

For example, my site is Arabic.
Forums in the Arab web community have become few and rare and no one wants to participate in them. When you mention to someone that you own a forum, they laugh at you and mock you and say you are (old) others are present on social networking sites and social applications and you are still present on forums.
For that reason, I mentioned the suggestion above, which is to change the display style and create a new style that combines the style of forums, blogs and content management

WordPress is generally managed by 1 person or a group of people on a mission that already carries out some type of unified uniformity for the site.
One member will upload 400x600 image, another 150x500, another 1080x1080, and so on.
You missed this part when you have 100s of members creating content.

They will use what they want. Not always what you tell them.

You can tell them the dimensions, but to ensure uniformity, you're going to have to turn off "post content without approval" to ensure uniformity and the users have respected your dimensions. You'll also have to double check, that if they haven't, it looks as clean as this:

Because I guarantee you somebody will upload a thumbnail size image that will be stretched as opposed to a large image that will be reduced in size to still look good.

Just to reiterate my point, inspect each one of those images and/or download them and tell me the dimensions. I'll bet they are all the same, or larger than the viewable ratio block to appropriately "crop" (center) with CSS. You're not going to get that with forum users because they don't care (as much as you) about how you want your site to look.

My friend.. The presence of the avatar next to the topic also has no benefit, and often the member's picture will not be related to the topic title or the content within the topic. If it is removed, it will be better and more organized for the topics.

Do you think it is acceptable to repeat the avatar?

I told you that reducing the size of images can be done programmatically and automatically without user intervention, whatever the size of the image, as is found in many WordPress templates.

Honestly, I rather see some missing features that make XF feel incomplete rather than anything "big" or "shiny".
  • User leaving conversation should be reflected in the conversation participants list [2016].
  • Forum icons [2010; easy to implement ourselves but it's been popular with many forums & has been asked A LOT]
  • Set custom featured pic for article forum when creating a thread (if not already possible)
  • Apply Name Change to quotes & user mentions [2018]
  • More features available when you follow someone [multiple suggestions have been suggested]
  • Don't remove line breaks and formatting from article snippets [2020]
  • Alerts to prompt people to select a best answer for their question thread [2020]
  • Contact us to be available when site is inactive [2014]
  • Custom field Permissions [2017]
  • Prevent duplicate alerts for profile post comments [2014; this was a big issue for one of my active forums]
  • Members should not be able to lock conversations with mods [2016; this is madness]
  • Color picker in templates [2019]
  • Reply To Existing Conversation Permission [2018]
  • Choose Account Upgrade at registration [2018]

While this is a common and easy objection, this is a misleading objection when compared to society as a whole.

Does XF develop for forum users from 10 years ago?

Or, does XF develop for modern web users?

We should not confuse and overlap our forum users - who are a shrinking part of Internet users - with all modern web users.

Who is our target audience? Other modern Internet users, or only other forum users?
