Yep still an issue with GBoard keyboard. Everyone needs to reply on that issue thread to get it re-opened and fixed for Pixel/Gboard users.

Switching to the Samsung native keyboard works (I'm on a Galaxy S6). I'm not fond of that keyboard, at least compared to GBoard, but it beats wrestling with autocorrect messing things up.
