Currently attachments are referenced in this URL format:
I'm of the opinion that having the URL end in its original image extension is a better choice. Not sure how important it is, but this would improve compatibility with legacy browsers. When saving to disk, IE6 for instance recognizes the above resource as a bitmap, even though it's a GIF.
So, in short, I feel attachment URLs should look something like this:
It may offer a benefit SEO-wise as well. Sure, Google can handle both links when indexing images, but can all the other search engines out there?
