Not planned Attachment URL Structure

Currently attachments are referenced in this URL format:

Code:
http://xenforo.com/community/attachments/background-roll-under-gif.180/

I'm of the opinion that having the URL end in its original image extension is a better choice. Not sure how important it is, but this would improve compatibility with legacy browsers. When saving to disk, IE6 for instance recognizes the above resource as a bitmap, even though it's a GIF.

So, in short, I feel attachment URLs should look something like this:

Code:
http://xenforo.com/community/attachments/180.background-roll-under.gif

It may offer a benefit SEO-wise as well. Sure, Google can handle both links when indexing images, but can all the other search engines out there?

I think browsers are more likely to look at the content-type header returned than the extension of the url as that could be modified easily.

Good point. All modern browsers check the content-type header, so it's not an issue there - just the few special cases with legacy browsers like IE6 that only seem to look at the extension.
