that is because it has not gotten an update in 90 days i think. developer has not indicated that he is no longer supporting this addon.

tbh, this should be part of core xenforo. or the media embeds should be a modular component that can be updated outside xenforo releases.

What makes you think that? If that would be the rule loads of XF add ons would be labeled "unmaintained". Xon has explained the background already a couple of posts further up ...

It means it has been 1-3 months since he last logged in, free add-ons get the unmaintained flag added vastly more aggressively than paid add-ons.
... as it has been explicitely outlined in XF's housekeeping rules for add ons:

Which in this case here once more fire back badly.

Unmaintained, wow.....
More and more plugins are being abandoned, with many still stuck on versions 2.1 and 2.2.

This is a free, open-source plugin. We could put together a team and work collaboratively on a fork of the project, maintaining and developing it together. We could update existing embed codes and add new ones.

this addon sort of relies on the github account of the developer so it would not be easy to manage without rewriting a lot of code to remove dependency. i do think that this addon is not abandoned. @JoshyPHP does not visit the forum that frequently. but he maintains the same addon for multiple forum platforms. maybe he is just more focused on other platforms. should be easy to just file a ticket on his github account and see if he has indeed abandoned this addon?

it does appear that the last activity on his account was around three months ago.

maybe a bit of an over-reaction. He has been maintaining this add on forever and put in countless hours of free work, year after year. Now he has not been around here for a couple of weeks - in my opinion that means nothing spectacular, the more as the add on works as usual and there is no real need to update. Not really an indicator that the add on would be abandoned.

Calling to take over the add on seems not justified in my opinion and even less so w/o contacting the add on author before that via PN or other means. I'd also guess that a "collaborative take over of the project" would with a high probabilty end nowhere after only short amounts of time.

You can already do that for your installation if you are missing something. Just go in ACP to admin.php?bb-code-media-sites/. You could always post updates or new sites to the thread here so that others could make use of it.

I'm developing my own add-ons now and Admin three different sites including an entire server, so my time is limited. But it is an interesting idea!

Xenforo stopped paying him ?
Do you have any proof or at least indication that XF did ever pay @JoshyPHP for this add on? Or are you just making up claims out of nothing, defaming an unpaid volunteer that did something great unpaid in his spare time?
The guy already disappeared for six months, from February to July.
Not committing code to a code repository of a free add on that works perfectly fine is clearly something different than "he disappeared". He has developed and maintained this add on for free for many years and it works perfectly fine. There can be many reasons for not comitting code from "no need" over "busy with other things, some of them even pay my bills" or "change in life priorities" to somehing bad like sickness. Some on here really act like vultures and show no respect at all. Looking at this kind of behavior it is astonishing that anyone does develop free add ons and other free code at all.

Anyone know if the other forum software addons are getting updated ?

I think this should be a paid addon.

From what I've observed, practically everything is either coming to a halt or has already stopped.

I think the reasons are quite simple.

No new forums are being created, while existing ones are just running "as is". And this satisfies neither users nor forum owners.

People who used to develop plugins are getting tired, and there are fewer and fewer of them.

On the other hand, we now have Claude and other AI tools that can write and fix add-ons.

So that the person has at least some incentive...
Realistically, what you can earn through a forum add on can (with very few exceptions) not be considered an income or incentive (at least not in a first world country). The market is too small to make relevant revenue, and ongoing support (this thread has 136 pages...) is unpaid time.

Most that develop free add ons have other incentives than money. However, the behavior in this thread over the last couple of posts seems pretty effective to destroy any motivation that the add on author may have.

That's a bit of a stretch. Where did you get that info from?

The evolution of online forums:

  1. 2005–2010: The Golden Age of Forums. Almost every niche, game, hobby, and community could have its own dedicated forum.
  2. 2010–2015: The Beginning of the Shift. Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and Instagram gradually started pulling users away from traditional forums.
  3. 2015–2020: The Mass Migration. Online discussions increasingly moved to social networks, messaging apps, and specialized platforms.
