Yes, there is a less.php project which is basically less.js in PHP which means it is easier (for the developers of the project) to maintain parity.

Yes, but so much of the underlying architecture will be upgraded that it wouldn't be realistic to expect 1.x add-ons to work. The most popular (and profitable) ones will certainly release versions for XF2also, will xf 2.0 break all custom add ons?
