XenForo 2.0 Discussion

I sure hope Xenforo doesn't become like nodeBB. It definitely looks neat, but it also reminds me of communities like tumblr or livejournal, definitely not what I want to see in a forum/community software that I pay for. What I would love to see though is animated avatars out of the box without having to change this or install that (just one of the many small things I would like to see).

Edit: Also would love to see this implemented: https://xenforo.com/community/threads/custom-avatar-sizes-and-jpeg-quality.76019/

If I want to change it from 100x100 to 250x250, I want to be able to do that easily and not having to go through the pain of changing every little detail each time.

Edit 2: Removed links. Nvm, the tutorials that tell you how to do this don't work as I thought they would. They just go from medium to large avatar, can't customize it.

Edit 3: Maybe this will work: https://xenforo.com/community/threads/which-style-property.31695/#post-363047 but can't test as I'm not home at the moment.

What I want to see in xenforo 2 is better user experience.
the actual way forums is displaying content in forumhome and thread-lists is not user-friendly.
example: the user in forum home see only thread titles, if he want to read the latest topics or the latest posts he has to click the title, wait for the page to load, he must also go back the to forumhome again and repeat the same steps for every thread or post he want to see. in theory he will need more than 20 clicks to read 10 posts.
In Facebook all new topics, posts are displayed in the same place with option to comment without clicking or leaving the page, this is a far more efficient way to display and interact with content.

I went back in this thread into March and unless I missed it, I saw no info about the progress of 2.0. I understand that it is probably impossible to come up with release times. Has there been any talk of ballparking when beta testing might begin?

We have a rather ambitious application that we are spec'ing out and the thought was to use XF as our platform. We really do not want to embark on this with the 1.x line only to find that XF has moved on to 2.0 sooner than we thought.

Is there anything new that can be said as far as the pace of development? Can you at least give us an idea of when you expect to show us something tangible?

Thanks!

That's too bad. I did read that post but thought there might be some new info, seeing how that was nearly 4 months ago.

I am not saying it should be done, just asking for some kind of update and possibly a road map.

They've never done it. I don't see why they would choose to start giving a roadmap and setting expectations for the largest release in years. They don't even do it when it involves implementing a minor bug fix.

3 months and 1 day, to be precise.

The situation hasn't changed significantly from that post.

While we have internal targets, we're not at the position to discuss any public timings yet. (Though that is implicitly saying it's still a while off.)

Okay, well thanks anyway. Perhaps another question then would be, how difficult do you suppose it will be for developers to convert apps from 1.x to 2.x? I am picturing it to be rather difficult lol.

There will be some work required, the amount of which depends on the add-on.

I suspect some developers will take the opportunity to do a rewrite, which may be easier than trying to update the existing code.

I just hope whatever your working on will either A: Have better integration with Facebook (like people can reply via facebook and people still get alerts when replied to and to go within the posts or B: Blow away facebook groups as simplicity/speed/etc. - we have the largest Facebook group in our niche but it would still be awesome to blow them away.

I know of forums that Facebook is killing theirs due to their forums are not active anymore - I would follow their (facebook) footsteps in some ways.

A page where i've to enter captcha to see the content? Sorry, no way.

The correct URL for nodeBB is https://nodebb.org or https://community.nodebb.org for the demo.

Btw. discourse is pretty similar to nodeBB http://www.discourse.org/

Thank you. I usually try to refrain from free "things". Makes me remeber my first PhpBB experience. Or should I call it torture...

Link was removed, but in attachments you can see what I mean. And browse for that forum is very very friendly
