Tapatalk - yes or no

Tapatalk is a great way to get exposure for smaller forums or forums you are trying to rebuild. The BYO apps are great for gaining new members via the two app stores. It just depends on your expectations when adding them.

Tapatalk is a revenue parasite. Avoid at all costs.

Additionally you lose control of look and feel. Members can't see your portal homepage - so important posts are missed. The sense of community gets eroded because Tapatalk users are in their own silos.

I can't wait to dump it when I finish my migration from vB.

Just my jaded experience over the years. :)

Well we were considering only the BYO for brand purposes. But from what I gather it just doesn't work. Have you used them at all?

We were only considering the BYO option if it system worked.

I have Tapatalk installed, and generally think it's nice for people like myself with ancient smartphones. For anyone with a tablet or a more modern smartphone, the XF responsive feature is a much better option.

One thing I really dislike about it is the pop-up thing it displays on your website to try and make users buy and use the app. I want to remove this pop-up, but haven't looked into it yet.

I will probably get rid of TT at some point once most people have moved on to better hardware.

enable debug mode and then remove the listener in your ACP. Kinda like tracking down malware lol

Enable debug mode > ACP > Development > Code Event Listener > uncheck template hook for Tapatalk. no more notifications.

Im running tapatalk on vbulletin and will remove it pretty soon after I migrate my big board to xenforo. Xenforo's responsive style is much better and in contrast to TT XF does show resource manager, gallery on mobile.
The only thing that XF really lacks is PUSH notifications. That will be a shame to lose.

Avoid.

1) Spammers register through their registration process.
2) You lose control of how and what of your site is presented. For example gallery addons, chat, custom addons will not work with tapatalk.
3) Why let tapatalk make money of your content?
4) Their support is horrendous. I keep getting automated emails from their support asking why i left even after sent them the reasons.
5) XF is mobile responsive now. Why the need to push your customers away to another app, which showcases other forums?

You build your brand through your website, not through an app that is bought off and controlled by another company.

Thanks, much appreciated! Funny you should mention malware: Not exactly the same, but I think Adblock actually blocks it.

I guess it would be integrated soon in the browser itself for iOS (OS X already has that), and Google chrome on the other hand (Android).

Tapatalk could just have added a setting to turn this off. Instead you need to disable the code event listener after every upgrade. This is one reason why I try to upgrade TT as few times as possible.

Thanks. But with the BYO we have complete control of the ads. I will double check that.

I can't answer your first question.

Question two I can. I use it. The only reason I did was because I had a member that is a friends son. He didn't spend much time on the site. When it went responsive he spent more time on it then it dropped off. I talked to him at a BBQ one day and he was talking about TT. I told him that I thought about it but didn't want it. He said it was easier to surf on his phone with it. So I told him I would put it on.

He did stay on for a bit but even that wasn't enough. But another reason I put it on was that I was hoping to have a few people find the site using it and maybe have them join up. I was going to get rid of it months later because it wasn't bringing anyone in. Then one day I noticed it in my stats. I checked it and it people were checking out the site. Two or three members were using it. So for now it stays.

But what issues does it have? It is missing a lot of features. I can't get it on my Blackberry and I don't want it. But I have talked to him and others. It will be easier to talk about what it does have. It has posts, push notification and they say all sites are laid out the same. Its missing all the add ons that some enjoy. I have Showcase, Sportsbook and so on that are not available on TT.

I don't the popularity of the app.

That's the only reason why I kept Tapatalk on my site regardless of how useless it is - I mean, 60% of the time, I don't see participation from the user. I even deleted a few users who weren't even posting due to this. Then I start seeing more users registering via Tapatalk... First thing I said "You know what? f-it. Just leave it alone." Mostly because I can't even tell who's a spammer, or who's a lurker, or who's a real poster... just looking at "0 posts" because some of them are lurkers. So, I made it a habit to look in the user's IP address to make sure it's a spammer or not.

Maybe because all the people visiting your site or registering via tapatalk are not actually people interested in your forums, but are actually spammers.

^^ This

I was able to figure which members were able to register via TapaTalk, because they were not being logged in the foolbothoneypot add-on (had it set to track all registration attempts, success or fail). I had people posting spam who were not in that list, so the only way they could have registered was via TapaTalk. Wasn't long after I removed it.
