Get app or wait for 1.2?

Hmm i might buy the responsive design but i'm torn on the fence too between that or just waiting for 1.2... :p
Yeah, who knows what they are doing with 1.2. They mentioned a mobile style, but I feel a responsive design is far superior, because it takes one style and removes all the crap that isn't needed and adjusts the width when browsing from a mobile device.

The responsive style is only edited when browsing mobile though, right? When i'm on a desktop my style will remain in-tact?

The younger folks don't even understand why (or how) they would want to upload images to the site. They just put them on Facebook or Photobucket (using the app on their phone) and post a link.

It's the way things are going, like it or not.

This sounds accurate for SOME - maybe even most - forums, especially those geared to style, gaming, celebrity and quickly moving subjects....

BUT, it is probably not accurate for more education topics. Examples - boat forums, R/C or "deeper" hobby forums, construction and how-to forums, etc. etc.

There are really two types of users - those who create content and those who consume it. Yeah, that's very general, but phone and FB users are much more likely to be the later.

The entire idea of a lot of forums is the sharing of information...which often entails more than you can type with one finger.

Not to say we have not entered the mobile revolution...we have. But each forum admin or owner should look closely at their target markets. If a forum is about parenting infants, for instance, it is very likely mom or dad may be at home in front of a computer or an ipad with keyboard, etc.

Just for comparison, my new (quadcopter, drone) forum has about 10% true mobile (phones, not pad!) visitors and my big old forum (hearth.com) has about 8%.

I think we could call this the tablet revolution....as opposed to phone....if my numbers mean anything! There are about as many or more ipad users as phones.....

So do I spend £580 plus the monthly cost of the app for the sake of the icon on peoples' phones plus notifications (both of which I suspect are effective traffic drivers) or do I go with the adaptive design for just £30 all done?
Hmmmm
Or just get the regular (free to us) TapaTalk app. Never really understood the need for a branded one, especially when you can add forum specific widgets to your phone's desktop with the free one.

Because unbranded Tapatalk will eat your profit like no other.

In a few weeks support for limiting to specific usergroups is suppose to be added.

Profit from ads, app sales, etc?
Profit from ad revenue, though it depends on your niche.

Over half the users of my site use Tapatalk which eats a large chunk of our revenue, and as a new site it's going to be difficult to fund all of the custom work we need done to get where we want to be.

I could understand why that would be a good reason to not use the free version. (y)

Arty has a responsive design that I think is really good and it works perfectly on both mobile and tablets. Its worth every penny and adapts to your style.

I have decided to use the responsive design for now, but I might invest in a branded tapatalk app for ios and android at some point. The only benefit I think you get from an app over the responsive design is that you get push notifications and an app icon placed on users mobile phones, which both could help in getting users back to your forum more often.
This is the only reason I need an app for. Russ mobile style is perfectly fine. I don't need Arty's responsive design because Russ mobile style is way faster than that style. I just need an app with push notifications and an app icon for the mobile style. If Xenforo did that, that would be great. If it could be done so that it's found in the app store or google play etc, that would be even better. I think that's what 0xym0ron did for his mobile style (minus the push notifications).
