XF 1.5 Bounced Emails going to Default Email Address

Well-known member
Our bounced emails always are returned to the board's Default Email Address when we sent out emails to our users. even though I setup a separate email address from our default email address called noreply@ to handle bounces. The bounce log is always empty.

Transport method is default and Set return path with -f parameter is checked.

Enable variable bounced email address values- checked
Enable automated bounced email handler- Checked /POP3
Bounced Email Address is set to the @noreply address.

Thanks for your help!

Does the bounce contain the original email headers? Do those headers contain a return-path with your bounce address? If that header is showing correctly then maybe some recipient servers are ignoring it. This is just a guess though.

Here is a partial header of a sample email from a message that was delivered to me successfully.

Here is what the bounced header looks like:

I see this at the top:
Code:
Return-Path: <tbird@fordthunderbirdforum.com>
I can see the other Return-Path header (the noreply one) below, but it's not being respected.

If the -f option isn't resolving this, then your PHP user may not have permission to use the param. How you change that will vary depending on the program sending the mail (the MTA, like Postfix). Here's one possible solution: https://www.howtoforge.com/community/threads/fix-for-x-authentication-warning.18269/ If that doesn't work, there may be a different requirement for your MTA or configuration.

For the time being, I changed the Default Email Address to our noreply address and it seems the email users goes to the bounced email processing correctly.

In case anyone else has an issue in the future, I switched back to SMTP mail and used the Enable variable bounced email address values and made sure the address was a catch all. Now the messages are showing up in the bounce log, however I am not sure if they are being classified correctly. I did a test message to a non existing gmail account and the bounce log said it was "Auto-Reply" however google said:
