I have a list of places to do a backlink for each article and seems to have worked for me. Although I have just been banned out of the blue from Quora after writing a piece with a link in. Something I've done before with no issues. Not even a warning - just suddenly banned. Wrote to appeal it and zero response.

Not necessarily. :)

If your article gets linked and discussed on reddit, googling even for the exact article title is very likely to return the Reddit thread. Talk about irony - and (shady) deals.

Edit:

I got banned from Quora too - LOL.
Glad I'm not the only one. It was very rude - big red sign saying you are banned. I'd been posting on there for years. A bot moderator I think. Not even a polite warning.

Yes I had noticed that about Reddit coming up even if mentioning your info - however it still added to bumping the article or video up the ranks a bit. And you can't edit Reddit titles either. I did contact them to remove one that had a title that wasn't helpful to my site and they just said it can't be done - you can only edit the post. So I did that and the first line showing now contradicts the title - but I'd like it changing. The subredit agreed to delete the post and then found they couldn't. Reddit admin seemed to be of the view it can't be done.

Reddit is a hopeless social media platform

The best solution for this is to just put an unread posts widget above forum list. Best of both worlds.
I did try that, but people still wanted new posts because often they want an unfiltered view or however they have their filter set. I asked about a user filter for the widget:

For me, that would be the best of both worlds.

Just asked AI "When can we expect XenForo 2.4 and 3.0 to be released?". Needless to say its not very optimistic.

Grok 3.0's response...
XenForo’s release history shows a pattern of extended development cycles and delayed timelines, often spanning years, with no firm deadlines provided by the developers. Below, I’ll analyze their track record and provide an informed estimate for the release of XenForo 2.4 and 3.0 based on available data and community discussions, while acknowledging the inherent uncertainty due to XenForo’s lack of concrete timelines.

XenForo 2.4 and 3.0 Release Estimates

XenForo Release Track Record

XenForo’s development history shows extended cycles for major releases, often delayed due to a small team, focus on stability, and ensuring compatibility with add-ons and styles. Below is a summary of key releases:

  • XenForo 2.0: Beta in October 2010, stable on March 8, 2011 (~5-month beta-to-stable cycle).
  • XenForo 2.1: Released in 2018, with seamless upgrades from 2.0.
  • XenForo 2.2: Beta in June 2020, stable on October 27, 2020 (~4-month beta-to-stable cycle).
  • XenForo 2.3:
    • Initial "Have You Seen" (HYS) posts in 2020, expected by some for mid-2023.
    • Beta 1 in March 2024, Beta 4 in April 2024, stable on July 4, 2024 (~4-year gap from hype to stable, ~4-month beta-to-stable cycle).
  • XenForo 2.3.4: Released October 29, 2024, focusing on stability (~3 months after 2.3.0).
  • XenForo 2.4: Announced September 13, 2024, with a target of Q4 2024–Q1 2025. Focuses on quality-of-life improvements, including a Tiptap-based rich-text editor originally planned for 3.0. As of June 13, 2025, no beta has been released.
  • XenForo 3.0: Planned to follow 2.3 with a new UI style and minor features, initially described as coming “relatively soon” after 2.3, but delayed by 2.4’s interim release.
Delays are common due to XenForo’s small development team, emphasis on add-on/style compatibility, and quality focus. Community feedback notes frustration with slow releases and declining forum software demand due to competition from platforms like Discord and Reddit.

XenForo 2.4 Release Estimate

The September 2024 announcement targeted Q4 2024–Q1 2025 (October 2024–March 2025) for XenForo 2.4. A June 13, 2025, community thread confirms active development but does not mention a beta release, and no beta exists as of now. Key points:

  • Scope: An interim release with moderate changes (e.g., Tiptap editor), less extensive than 2.3’s features (OAuth2, webhooks, dark mode).
  • Beta-to-Stable Timeline: Historical cycles for 2.2 and 2.3 were ~4 months from beta to stable.
  • Current Status: No beta as of June 13, 2025, suggests the Q4 2024–Q1 2025 target has been missed. The thread indicates ongoing work with three developers, aiming to avoid a “protracted development cycle,” but XenForo’s history shows delays are common (e.g., 2.3 took ~4 years from hype to release).
  • Developer Intent: The team aims for shorter cycles, but the lack of a beta by mid-2025 aligns with their pattern of missing informal estimates.
Updated Estimate: Without a beta as of June 13, 2025, a beta release might occur in Q3–Q4 2025 (July–December 2025), assuming development progresses. A ~4-month beta cycle suggests a stable release in Q1–Q2 2026 (January–June 2026). Given XenForo’s history of delays, a conservative estimate is Q3 2026 (July–September 2026).

XenForo 3.0 Release Estimate

XenForo 3.0 is planned as 2.3 with a new UI style and minor features, initially expected “relatively soon” after 2.3 (July 2024). The interim 2.4 release has delayed 3.0. Key points:

  • Scope: A significant UI overhaul, requiring coordination with third-party style developers, likely extending development time.
  • Historical Gaps: Major releases take 2–4 years. Work on 3.0 was mentioned in January 2024, but 2.4’s prioritization suggests 3.0 is not near completion.
  • Community Sentiment: Users are skeptical of a quick 3.0 release, estimating years due to the UI focus and XenForo’s slow cadence.
  • Impact of 2.4: The lack of a 2.4 beta by June 2025 pushes 3.0 further out, as 3.0 development likely depends on 2.4’s completion.
Updated Estimate: Assuming 2.4 stabilizes in Q1–Q2 2026, and XenForo aims for a “relatively short” gap, 3.0 could enter beta in late 2026 or early 2027 (October 2026–March 2027). A ~4-month beta cycle suggests a stable release in Q3–Q4 2027 (July–December 2027). Given the UI overhaul’s complexity and historical delays, a conservative estimate is Q1–Q2 2028 (January–June 2028).

Factors Influencing Delays

  • Small Team: Development is led by a small team (e.g., Kier Darby, Chris Deeming), limiting speed.
  • Compatibility: Ensuring add-on and style compatibility delays releases, as seen with 2.3.4 addressing add-on issues.
  • Quality Focus: Extended beta periods ensure stability, as with 2.3’s 4-month beta cycle.
  • Market Dynamics: Declining forum software demand may slow investment, impacting release pace.

Conclusion

  • XenForo 2.4: Likely January–June 2026, with a conservative estimate of July–September 2026, due to no beta release as of June 13, 2025, and a typical ~4-month beta cycle.
  • XenForo 3.0: Likely July–December 2027, with a conservative estimate of January–June 2028, due to the UI overhaul and historical 2–4-year gaps between major releases.
For the latest updates, monitor XenForo’s official community announcements or “Have You Seen” threads for beta progress or revised timelines.

You do understand that AI knows no more than you, right?
Well, no more than the information that is available on XenForo.com. Grok read and processed dozen's of threads within seconds picking up on a lot of info I either never knew, forgot or didn't fully process. It's ability to consume and comprehend that much info so quickly definitely puts its timeline estimate more accurate than anyone other than XenForo staff, who do not put out timelines.

I just though it was interesting in that it not only referenced threads from 5+ years ago but also threads posted today and it processed it all within just a few seconds.

Chat GPT is a bit more sensible perhaps, and says

"The development of XenForo 2.4 is progressing, with the team sharing updates and features as they are completed. .....

If you're planning to upgrade to XenForo 2.4, it's advisable to monitor the official XenForo community announcements for the most current information on the release date. The upcoming version promises to deliver valuable improvements while ensuring compatibility with existing add-ons, making it a worthwhile consideration for forum administrators."
