mine is a conservative community that doesn't like change.

What community does? I've never yet run a forum in which even one user said, "gee, I really wish the interface here were different." Most often, you have a case of an admin trying to sell a community on the latest whiz-bang UI change that comes as a result of an upgrade, and the users' response is something akin to, "Oh, man, just leave things alone. We're here to post."

The first iPhone was released about 9 years ago, this started the move toward mobile. The first iPad was released in April 2010 -- a little over five years ago. And since then, there has been a seismic shift in the way people use their computers. A huge chunk of traffic is now coming from tablets, phones, etc... smaller form-factors with touch.

I think XF and all other platforms ignore this at their own peril. The default styles -- even the responsive ones -- are not great for smaller form-factors. Waiting for 3rd parties to correct this feels like a strategic mistake. This may be what he's referring to (?)

I don't think XF has ignored mobile--or varied screen sizes--at all. I've not heard any complaints from my users about the mobile experience of XF.

Why not? The default style is responsive.

And what's the alternative? Native apps?

I think a part of that was possibly to do with the initial release of XF where there was very little parity with the already established market "players" - namely vB and IP.Board. However, in the five years since then XF has matured into a solid product with a great following and is now holding it's own and gaining market share. People like XF; both as admins and users. It's easy and intuitive to use, but yes, there is a lot more that could be done to improve it and I'm sure the guys are working on it.

Personally I'd love to see soft-deleted content become searchable / visible - it would make modding soooo much easier.

Yes. I think almost everything will make it over from XF1 unscathed.

Personally I'd love to see soft-deleted content become searchable / visible - it would make modding soooo much easier.

Lack of a recycle/trash node is one of the only features I feel XF is missing. The way it handles soft deletes is aesthetically ugly for an otherwise elegant piece of software. There are about 6 threads on this in the suggestion section, hopefully it makes it in 2.0.

We have no specifics, yet, but we will be updating all current products to version 2.0.

Yes, indeed. I'm hoping that XFES2 will have major enhancements so that it comes in line with modern expectations.

As much as I'd love to see a mobile app I'm not sure how the mechanics of this would be handled given the vastly different publishing guidelines and highly specific criteria. Publishing an app is a high maintenance affair at best. Perhaps a solid API with hooks would be reasonable or a skeleton app of sorts.

Nothing is more important than good mobile access. Mobile skins are too clumsy and slow still.
