What's New Digest

What's New Digest 5.3.1

That's a bad idea on a live site - setting enableMail = false does not just stop emails from being delivered until you re-enable it - it stops them from being queued at all. So any mails that are sent while enableMail is disabled, just disappear and won't ever be sent.

My bad, I thought they were qued. Just learned something new...

In Test Mode now. I might suggest that be default for new installs.
When they unsubscribe, the Digest selection in preferences changes to None correct? And it does not affect the XF updates email subscription, even if that is checked for sending, correct?
@Sim is this correct?

Is this correct?

Bug report: In Test mode, users cannot unsubscribe from any emails sent from when not in test mode. The link goes to an error page.

Receive Email Digest option changes to None when a user unsubscribes.

Unsubscribing from digest emails doesn't affect "Receive news and update emails" settings unless they choose to unsubscribe from all emails.

Regarding the bug report - the only user who will receive test emails is the admin user - or the user configured in the options. Unsubscribing won't work because it is not their email. It is behaving as intended.

Not sure how this is intended. I had the add-on live and it sent emails out. I switched to Test mode to work on it, and the users that received the emails while it was live get an error when they try to unsubscribe via the email link.

Test mode only affects the emails that get sent out and has nothing to do with the built-in unsubscribe mechanism - which is what the digest emails hook into when users unsubscribe.

If they are unsubscribing from genuine digest emails - then it should work - if it doesn't, there's an issue that's unrelated to test mode and I'll need more detail to be able to identify the cause.

You didn't disable the addon did you? That will break the unsubscribe links because it's looking for the whatsnewdigest email unsubcribe processor but won't be able to find it.

I did disable it before you suggested I put it in Test mode to stop emails. Perhaps it happened while disabled. That seems logical. Thanks

@Sim, could you disable some email domains for us? Hotmail bans users if too many emails are sent. Could you please either do this or guide me on how to do it?

That's not on my current list of priorities. I'll put it on the suggestion list for a later version when I have time.

In the meantime, you could just update the database directly to disable digest emails for all hotmail users.

WARNING: the following code has not been thoroughly tested - use at your own risk. Make sure you take a full database backup before executing.

SQL:
UPDATE xf_user_option AS o
LEFT JOIN xf_user AS u ON (o.user_id = u.user_id)
SET o.whatsnewdigest_email = 'none'
WHERE SUBSTRING(u.email, -11) = 'hotmail.com'

See @Sim's What's New Digest which looks to implement everything this add-on does in XF1 for XF2
Well not exactly - at the moment my addon only sends lists of "New" and "Updated" threads regardless of whether someone is "watching" them or not.
I'll create a bitbucket account and submit a pull request then :P It is a fairly small change to add a "watching" option toggle when you've done all the hard work of making it email stuff already
I was thinking of creating a PR for adding a filter so it would only returned "watched" threads to be a fully replacement of an old XF1.x add-on

IIRC the XF1 Watched Threads Digest addon did not only list Watched threads posted since the last mailing, but all watched threads that have new content since last visit. So it would not be a full replacement, but certainly useful. I'd love to be able to send a monthly watched content digest to my members.
