We're now on Bluesky 🦋

Can you explain to me the benefit of having prominent links on your home page that takes people away from your site?
They open in a new browser window so don't take people away. It's actually experimental so I won't know the benefits until I have found them, or not.

Mastodon's problem is going to be the same as Lemmy's. I tried to switch after the Reddit APIcalypse, but needing to choose a homeserver and finding out they don't see content from wherever <reddit community> migrated to because of your homeserver's politics or whatever, kills it for most users.

It's great for people who care about users and communities being able to self-moderate, but Joe Average couldn't care less if it happened on Venus in an alternate universe. They just want to sign up somewhere and be able to post and see others' posts.
This.

I couldn't get my head around mastodon. Found it was hard to get on.
Reddit is a load of overmoderation đź’© (it really stinks too)

I think I will use this. At the end of the day it's useful for backlinks and seo. Personally, I would pay good cash for a system that support various social platforms, including but not limited to, Facebook.

Open source, self-hosted, and can be hooked up to work with any automation API like Zapier or N8N.

X has gotten much better after Elon took it over and removed all the censorship. Criminals are being exposed so they left to bluesky
Mastodon concept was good but won't make it as it's just small instances and its centralized. Its already dying.
Bluesky isn't going to live in the long run its centralized and just a tiny minority of users.
Nostr will eventually win and beat all of the above. Its monetized and decentralized and anti-censorship.

One of the communities I manage is made up of security professionals, and one group within that community primarily focuses on helping FBI and other agencies with taking down content related to minors. Since Elon has taken over Twitter, there has been a huge rise in the amount of content floating around that platform, as well as minors selling that content themselves or adults grooming children.

Over censorship can be a problem, however kneecapping your safety team to the extent that you've now become equivalent to what use to be on the dark web isn't exactly a good idea.

Has any social media platform had any success based on a dislike for someone? A platform really needs to remain impartial at launch to be a success , in my humble opinion. I don't have a horse in this race so I look at as a whole. If X is now "right" wing and Bluesky is against X, it would then pretty much he considered more left leaning by default as it is taking in the refuges of X.

I'm unsure how it'll get policed. I just post gaming stuff. Facebook tried threads, that failed and that was fairly impartial. Any input is welcomed.
I was one of the early users on BlueSky. At first some people moved to Meta's Threads, but now people switch to Bluesky.
The UX of the app is horrible, it's like one of the first versions of Twitter.

I stopped using it after the "extreme-lefties" showed up. There are several reports from users that celebrated that Trump won, and they got banned for showing their support for Trump, while on X, it's quite mixed (but lately more right than left). I don't think BlueSky is the solution, and I believe everyone should be able to show the support for whoever they want. From all these ban-reports on BlueSky for showing support for Trump, Milei etc, I decided it's not really the platform for me. I stick to X/Twitter (also bc most people still use it), and bc I like the content (or well, most of it).

I don't think BlueSky will be the "next big thing". I do hate the "X" name tho, I prefer "Twitter" and "tweets".

I think you mean moderation. It's now a cesspit of racists.
Yes and no. There's a lot of racism, but tbh, I have quite a dark humor so it's ok for me, till a certain level. But you see this also on Instagram and TikTok. BlueSky is really more left-wing (woke I would say), and that's fine, but banning users for showing support for another political candidate? No, that's not cool.

But I agree that moderation should be better on X. I've seen several posts that I reported, and they're still there. To be honest, moderation on most social media bothers me. They're imo too slow with taking action.

I think that it'll eventually have one of the best moderation systems without a huge Safety workforce if they can automate it with Grok. They could easily run a post through and determine if it breaks the ToS, where it could only take 1 report to immediately take content down.

ChatGPT is pretty clear on what breaks their ToS when you run something questionable through, and lets you know right then and there that it may be a violation that could lead to your suspension.

Unsure if they're doing that yet though. If they are, it's not working the best yet.
