Lack of interest Upvote - Downvote Indicators

An observation: When I go to upvote a post, the arrow ( ^ ) is correctly pointing upwards...

But if I have a change of mind, I decide to undo the vote, even then the arrow is still pointing upwards, imho it should automatically indicate downwards to downvote from a logical point of view...

After you make an Up-vote (or a Down-vote), couldn't there just be a tooltip that says "Remove your vote" on hover of the arrow you pressed?
 
When the vote has been given I would show the down arrow and hide the up arrow. (c)

When you turn the switch on it shows you the only available option - to turn it off. Why would I want to invent one that after turning on would show me an option to turn on, which actually means turn off?
I don't know how it's possible to debate about such a thing for so long...
 
Would a filled circle like reactions help? Vote and you see the filled circle and it's bold, click again it is removed and the number goes down. I'm sure that took some time to get used to with reactions and this is no different. You are removing not downvoting. Showing it down is not the answer. This site does not have downvoting enabled, if you do then it just adds to the confusion because a removal is not a downvote.

I tend to agree, but I also understand that the format chosen by XenForo team is commonly used (on sites like StackExchange, Reddit, etc.)

Personally, I've never used voting on those sites so far (IIRC I don't even have an account), so I wonder if the majority of users on forums operated by XenForo customers will be akin to that?

Franky, I don't know but I have a feeling that it will not be obvious enough to our users which are usually not "generation YouTube".

I'd therefore appreciate if smth, could be done to improve this.

I am not sure, but maybe he refers to the little checkmark next to the upvote icon?
 
You guys are aware you can remove a downvote too right? You click it and it goes up (back). It's just not enabled here. By your logic here they should swap arrows both ways? No. And the screenshot is how XF works! They just don't have DV enabled.

But not exactly. XenForo does only show one counter in the middle between an up and a down arrow; YouTube does show two counters underneath tumbs up/down icons - this might be easier to understand, especially when changing a vote.

So yes, technically it is the same - but I'd say the UI and user perception is different.
 
We can agree to disagree :)

As said before, I might be wrong but I am pretty sure our users will find it easier to understand why an up counter goes down by one and the down counter goes up by one if they click on a thumbs down (while previously having voted up) instead of summation counter going down by two.

I can think of 3 differences:

1 Arrows rather than like/dislike icons (not a huge deal if it's easy enough to swap out the icons)
2 Vertically aligned (not a huge deal but I think there is a small psychological impact on the whole up/down debate)
3 Only one number on xenforo , ie the difference rather than showing the actual number of like & dislike. This is the big one that people do/will find confusing as it doesn't immediately re;ate to what they just did, unlike with the Youtube example.

Together it adds up to not being as user friendly or intuitive as I would like. But I don't wish to be selfish, ultimately I'll accept the will of the people

(NB: bullets have disappeared!)
 
I think a way to make it even more clear is to make the up arrow bold if you have already up-voted. Or the down arrow bold if you have voted that.

Compare to reactions, if you have reacted the Like icon changes. And below it, it states that You and others have reacted.
 
I just don't understand how people aren't grasping this at all...

Let's try to phrase it a different way with a question to all that think untoggling your up-vote shouldn't change the number.

You accidentally up-vote a suggestion not meaning to. You decide to untoggle your upvote. Are you now down voting the suggestion??? No you are not, you are just taking back the up-vote you gave on accident. Why should it act like you are down voting it?
 
I'm starting to think that people are believing the way that it is setup on this forum (NO DOWNVOTES ALLOWED) is the default way which it is NOT.
