I think marketing is the big thing. Good marketing and SEO ideas help forums rise.

Probably because they realize that a minimalistic design is more effective.

This is only an opinion but it seems there are one or two big sites in each niche which spread through word-of-mouth and they had an advantage because they started early. If one wants to compete with those established sites they need good marketing or a creative edge or the other sites will suck their members right back.

I didn't do anything to grow my forum, in fact some people said I did everything wrong and maybe I did. It grew all by itself, it does keep my busy as I get more messages from it then I can answer.
