I'm not watching the development forum, but I just got an alert for a new thread there:

Which you were presumably watching. So it's very likely that the alert was generated and the context changed after the fact, which is quite difficult to handle. I believe that is likely the case here, and thus isn't something we realistically see a great fix for. There is a similar situation if a thread is posted in a forum you watch and it's subsequently moved.

The other scenario--and this is more intentional--has to do with splitting posts out of an existing thread and what we do about watching the new thread. It's roughly ambiguous as to whether you should be watching the new thread. (I don't believe we actually copy watch records in this case though.)

OK that explains it. Good to know: if it had been a bug it's quite a showstopper!
