Examples of XF, beyond XF

Thought it might be an idea to have a thread about XF forums going beyond the core product - whether through design or being extended functionally.

Personally I have been very impressed with https://xenadmins.com - I think it is a great example of what you can do with add-ons, and although I rarely use add-ons myself (as I think it makes your forum brittle) it has definitely brought me round to the idea of installing a few.

Also, while talking about XA, Kier and Mike might want to have a look too - there are some excellent feedback threads and open and honest discussions about XF there.

Which addons are you referring to ? What functionality was extended ? and How does it help ?

Unread Post Count (by Chris D - only know as I've just popped on here to find it!)
Who's viewed this thread (tho can see potential downside to this too, but it's still neat)
Notification/alert amount in title (so leaving the forum open in a tab auto updates)
There's a few that I don't think I can share (unlocked the more you post/get liked)

There are quite a few others as well - you'd probably need to register and post for a while to notice them ;)

A few things I've done to extend XenForo way outside the scope of being a forum product...

Digital Goods Marketplace (it's actually one of the largest site/domain marketplaces these days):
https://marketplace.digitalpoint.com/

Advertising platform (for both advertisers and publishers... think along the lines of an AdSense/AdWords replacement):
https://advertising.digitalpoint.com/

Keyword Tracker (the largest one there is with nearly 100,000 users... tracks historical changes in search engine rankings [and some other stuff]):
https://tools.digitalpoint.com/tracker

Cookie Search Engine (constantly spidering the web 24/7):
https://tools.digitalpoint.com/cookie-search

There are a lot of other miscellaneous things I've built on top of the XenForo framework... website thumbnail generator (with API), social button system for other sites, etc.

Lots and lots of API stuff... for example area percent charts based on your Google Analytics data (via API): https://tools.digitalpoint.com/analytics-charts

Here is something I was thinking about today.

It would be great (super add-on) if someone would extend XF so it could easily contain dozens or hundreds of "mini-forums" much like small FB groups or even FB chat.

As an example, let's say I wanted to allow each soccer team in a certain state to have a free non-public communication place where they discuss stuff and post notices to their team. Each team who would want their little chat area would then sign up (approved by me) as a "mini-admin", and be able to invite others into their little space.

This is probably doable within even the current build, but not easy. They key would be to make it possible for the forum owner and then the mini-forum folks to do everything as easily as possible right out of the box.

I really do think there would be a market for this for many little associations, non-profits, etc....each mini-forum could also tie into separate FB, Twitter or other social media for when the groups wanted to make something more public.

Let me know when you finish it up, DP......

Edit - maybe this is it?

Why is it necessary to hold a valid XenForo license to visit an unofficial XenForo forum?
Guest, you are currently showing as not holding a valid XenForo license. Feel free to validate your license to be moved into a usergroup that has access to more site features.

Checked out that add-on and it's not quite there yet! It's the right idea, but too clunky (members of "teams" need the simplest interface possible).....and missing true threaded discussions within the teams...they seem more like profile posts with comments.

Great idea though. When that author or someone else gets it right, I suspect there will be lots of uses for it.

Maybe it's because (like my Linux forum) to allow XenForo license holders to bypass a lot of the "gotta do this to get that" upgrades that are in place (and like some that are by paid subscription only on one of my forums).

Access to the Resource Manager, able to use Xen Pushover as well as ability to be listed in XenTerminal

Screenshot_1.webp

are just a couple that are for Licensed Usergroup only that I know of right off.

And browsing as a guest, from seeing the quote above, means you are also missing out on quite a few add-ons that are installed simply for XenForo site owners to demo to see if they'd like to have that functionality at their own site. Resources added that some sites might want to use, but have no real place to demo them... or at a relatively inactive site where it's hard to gauge how it will look/work with different add-ons installed side by side with it. Like the Movie forum at XenAdmins. Uses @Snog TMDb Movie Thread Starter as well as @Daniel Hood Multi-Prefix add-on. You can test either one of those add-ons at the developers own site, but not together.

There are lots of add-ons I'd like to see, and @Azhria Lilu has started adding things you'd likely not see on a regular admin forum. While still staying the course of having top notch info, help and support for XenForo, she has also given members the ability to test add-ons in a comfortable, relaxed (and practically just a branch from here) atmosphere). Same users, same names, still the great support and discussion. Just with added features that XenForo understandably does not install here.

You've done a great job there :-)

What's next for DP? I'd love to see a custom design or tailored front end..
