I feel the difference between bold thread titles and non-bold thread titles is enough to distinguish between threads that have new/unread posts in them. I would stop using the "star" image (
list-item-new.png
) for this purpose, and consider using it for a new purpose-- to designate "hot" threads (threads with lots of recent activity), like vB3 did with the normally blue thread icon to an orangish color. (

I'd personally like a icon/picture of some description as it does make things easier to see. Having now seen the bold in action I like the bold but don't think it's quite enough. Maybe someone can come up with some little icon that's not a star, that sits to the left of the thread to highlight it quicker. I'm not sure I'm making any sense here lol.

(also the thread forums in the what's new section are almost impossible for me to read easily)

Thank you!

The forum name seriously needs to be darkened, as people who usually have no difficulty seeing are barely able to make it out, or have problems with it standing out. It should stand out the most on that line (And possibly name, but not as much).

I say an indicator needs to be there as well, either the speech bubble or something.

How about something like the green dot used in Mozilla Thunderbird, or the little blue dot used on the iPhone e-mail app? These are small and unobtrusive, can be neatly placed to the left, and if desired, could be even made clickable to mark the thread as read (just like in Thunderbird and the iPhone e-mail app).

Do you have any pictures of these? pretty please?

Oh, I'd like that ability actually.

Well, I completely missed most of this thread but seeing it now without any sort of icon, I have to agree with Floris that it's hard to make out what is read and what's not from a distance or just by glancing at it. Not really sure what the solution is (font color change? background change? bring back an icon?), but I am kind of missing the star do to the visibility it provided. :)

Good idea! That might work.

It does not look right to me, I still think if there will be icon to have where the star was, just after the title directly.

Where it was before doesn't seem right to me, because thread titles are all different lengths. Having an exact position to look as one is scanning through a thread list is much better, IMO.

So just to clarify this is an icon to indicate new posts in any thread?

Or just new posts in a thread which you've posted in?

Or is that going to be another icon?

The speech bubble Shelley designed probably would be dark enough for users to see.

As for the page icon to show that there is a new post, possibly a blue one, to keep consistency with the default theme.

Deterrent opinions. :D
That's why this thread is still going after ten pages of ideas/discussions about this matter. :D

I'll send the psd if you require it Kier?

Here's one from Thunderbird

The little green dot means the message is unread. Clicking on it marks the message as read. Fairly simple, IMO.

My idea is attached - I think both should be done as text and styled via css.

On my mock up I have
  • "new" as text styled with css
  • "posted in" as a background image within css
Both are textual elements using CSS to show different things, as such both can be changed easily...
