MG 1.1 category as navigation

Hi,
is it possible to use a MG category as navigation (like in the forums)?

Example:
There is a category named 2015.
This (navigation-) category has 12 sub-categories, like january, february, etc...

Now the 12 subcategories are filled with pictures.

When clicking on the category 2015 - nothing is displayed... :-(
I don't want to put pictures in 2015, but want to see there are 12 subcategories with pictures...

Edit the category and set the "Usergroups that can add media" so there is no user groups selected.

Ok, thanks - that works for images.
Is it possible to display the subcategories ?

I believe there's an add-on that does it, but I've never used it nor know much about it:
