XF 2.4 general discussion, feedback, complaints, random off topic posts, etc.

Is there a list of new features? Is auto removal of GPS location from images, or some kind of age verification in there by any chance? :-)

Thread 'Coming soon: XenForo 2.4' https://xenforo.com/community/threads/coming-soon-xenforo-2-4.225302/

Nine months? That’s not "coming soon," that’s a full-term pregnancy! Should we throw it a baby shower or just wait another decade for it to finally show up wearing a graduation cap?
These things take time.
It's not just the matter of changing the editor.
It's a matter of fixing up everything else.
Imagine if you were given a beta tester of 2.4 and it was full of bugs. I think you'd still complain.

They might adopt the strategy of having longer release cycles for intermediate versions, in order to gain more time for the much-anticipated version 3. That said, it's no longer really worth asking for information of this kind, as development is a dynamic process and they could face multiple setbacks, including long periods of inactivity due to errors or evaluations, until a quality solution is found.

I have two sites with a combined 15M post that I backup at separate times with this method. I backup and then copy a backup to a secondary drive. I then download a copy each night of the backup to a file server at my house using a script.
Backup, copy to another physical drive, and then upload all backups to a cloud server elsewhere. I then sync my NAS at home to retrieve them from the cloud. All automatic, and I don't have to touch it, and I keep sets of backup files going back for a period of time. Our host also does their own backup but I'd rather not rely on theirs.

What I find to be the most frustrating, is the acknowledgment that communication could be better and then the radio silence.

xenForo is screaming out for somebody who liaises with the development team and communicates with the users here.

The excitement is gone. It could be so easily brought back!

Was the exact same song and dance last year tbh.

Maybe they might have to add stuff to the whole software package considering they're a UK small business,
UK laws about minors have been released so they might just have to deal with those themselves too.

I normally don't say anything, but it is disheartening to see the lack of communication as well. I know it's the same old, like last year, but I thought things were really going to be different this time around when they discussed faster releases etc. I thought well the last couple of years were just hard times but they are back on track and 2025 is going to be a great year filled with new features and updates. I hate going over to the competition and seeing all the new updates, and the moderators and owners engaging and hanging and chatting with their members. I get it people get busy, problems arise, or people take vacations, but just a simple line like "Were still working hard and things are coming along nicely" once in a while in the HYS forum would keep people happy... for a while. I know it's not abandoned, but with no communication and lack of updates it makes people shy away from the product. It's an easy solution though, just let us know what is happening so we have something to hang onto. I'm not upset or anything, just hoping a better job at communication can be accomplished.

I found this very significant communication last week in the XF3 thread:
Improving content discovery (and laying the foundation with better infrastructure for multi-content-type things) are on our radar. Though, like everything else, it'll be ready when it's ready and we aren't keen to get too ahead of ourselves so do with that what you will.
Of course it remains to be seen how it manifests, but it seems to at least partially address the single biggest issue for me: problematic content discovery on XF.

I see XF staff communicating and posting new HYS. The last HYS was 6 weeks ago. It seems there will be a couple more HYS before we see XF2.4 beta. So I'd guesstimate there will be no XF2.4 next week or next month.

I too would like to see shorter release cycles. Maybe if they target 6 months release cycles then they will hit 12 months. :)

I'm not meaning to sound harsh here but it may come across that way.
But, we have plenty of people on here telling the staff here what to do all the time.
The staff here are becoming a little bemused at all of this "hurry up" business.
When they try to interact with us all they're being subject to the worst kind of bakes possible.
Can we make it that we don't go down this path please?
Because this has happened.

They previously said they were committing to 2 releases a year, and now it's very unlikely to even be 1 release.

but it is disheartening to see the lack of communication as well.

Sept 2020: 2.2 released
Jan 2024: Kier full-time on 3.0
Jul 2024: 2.3 released
Sept 2024: 2.4 coming soon, Q4 '24 to Q1 '25
May 2025: No indicative/pending release schedule for 2.4 or 3.0

This isn't a communication issue. It's appears way beyond that, a business that is in disarray. Leadership that is unable to agree or work together? Resources that are fractured and disengaged? One that is about to majorly pivot and make a major impactful business announcement? Delivery milestones that unable to be met or are so fluid they don't matter? In any case, it's about trust and brand respect. Both of which are taking huge hits.

Business plans are dynamic, and we've been trying to do better about communicating them, even if it's still imperfect. An update was posted last month:

We're still rounding out some things for 2.4, which we'll share more about when they're ready, and we have things in motion for beyond that too. We did miss our original target, but you won't be waiting four years for 2.4.

I'm currently debating whether to upgrade my forum from version 2.2 to version 2.3 or wait for version 2.4. I understand that I won't have to wait four years, but even two years is not a long time :)

Can you give me a recommendation? I just don't want to go through the whole tedious process of re-adjusting plugins again in a short amount of time. Do you think most
plugins will require another adjustment to 2.4?

Thanks for your valuable work.

The overall impact to add-ons should be much less between 2.3 and 2.4 than it was between 2.2 and 2.3, so upgrading shouldn't be nearly as tedious. The most notable exception will be editor-related add-ons but we'll see how that shakes out better during beta.

Is that an update about Flash Message Improvements, 2.4, or XF in general?
Most of our ongoing communication about development since that announcement have been in the form of HYS articles. We've been publishing them as features near completion rather than waiting until closer to the release to gather feedback and give people a better pulse on things.
