XF 2.4 general discussion, feedback, complaints, random off topic posts, etc.

While I can appreciate the influx of new development, I have yet to see anything innovative. I know that’s not easy, especially without alienating the current audience. But it is clear I’m not the only one thinking so.

XF is powerful, but we need more innovation on content discovery.

We do believe better content discovery is sorely needed, and it's something we're working towards, but we also are trying to deliver (admittedly smaller) quality-of-life features sooner rather than holding those back until bigger things are locked and loaded. That's effectively the strategy behind 2.4, even if we aren't perfectly on target.

Are you planning to implement search filter for custom fields as requested here?
It is the most voted suggestion for content discoverability.

I’d really love to know - how soon is “soon” in dev time, exactly?
I mean, if there was at least an alpha version, we could maybe, I don’t know… start getting things ready? Just a wild idea.

From experience: A software project starts, goes on and after some time enters the status "almost done". This status is the same as the release will be ready "soon" in dev time. Translated to normal human time it can mean anything between one day, two years or sometimes even "never". There ist no possibility to reliably predict what it means, not even for the devs themselves. It will be done when it's done (but then it's maybe released but still not done because there will be bugs that no one found before). This is the magic of dev time.

Given past releases, I’d say for a stable release around mid-late Fall. They will release 2.4 on this forum first for a month or 2. Then will be a period (1-3 months) of beta/RCs, followed by a public release. As always, I’d be hesitant to go live with a first release. We will also need to give addon developers time to update addons, as with any release, things can and will break.

As for 3.0, who knows. Unfortunately, XF is a bit like a rudderless boat these days.

I remember when 2.3 beta was used to run this forum and what a bugfest it was at first. I had the impression that it would never be a polished, solid product, but over time, it just kept getting better as the bugs were quashed one by one. Then it was released and tbh still a bit buggy, but the 2.3.6 version we have today is well polished and runs nicely without any obvious problems. I expect that 2.4 will be similar. Just wait a few months after official release before you try it as your main driver.

2.3 was a bigger jump across a larger gap of time....also dealt with more code areas...i dont expect to see the same pattern.....it still is concerning tho because this was supposed to be the rushed upgrade before 3.0 and it starts to feel we will get it close to when i used to imagine early 3.0 testing....makes sense to expect some issues esp with third party code for something as major as the editor swapping, but i dont think it should be quite the lag to stability 2.3 was.....doesnt clear much up however and its the situation of, oh well sure we are overdue some functionality but 2.4 is the quick release that doesnt have alot of that, and it may really be 2027 before we see it....or are forced to code it in ourselves.

i was almost feeling like i could care less about 3.0, but by the time it actually arrives im sure it will be overdue vital, much more than style related etc. idk what can be better tho unfortunately....unless they hire more developers....

At the time Chris D said that this level of bugs was routine, expected and not to worry as the software would be greatly improved, which it was, so yeah, it might well be similar, we'll just have to wait and see.

We only work one hour a week each. Kier works the other 160.
I knew it! 😮 Finally the truth comes out and we know that the earth is flat and we didn't go to the moon and... :ROFLMAO:
