Hopefully a CMS is next

XenForo is a forum software :)
Means they should stop developing Enhanced Search and the Resource Manager as well right? They aren't a search engine or resource management system.

There is no reason they shouldn't expand into other areas once they feel ready. I agree that the forum should be the primary focus, and it has been for 4 years. They can offer us a better way to manage other pages and move around some blocks to customize our communities more. I don't think anybody is calling for them to push out a product like Wordpress or a stand alone solution at all.

Enhanced Search is a forum enhancement. It is not a standalone search engine like google :) and they needed a system for resources here anyway.

But CMS is a whole different thing. I think xenforo should not develop a content management system. I also think they should not develop a gallery or a blog. These are the mistakes their competitors make. They should only focus on forum. Let the others (developers here) do the rest.

A portal like xenporta which is based on forum threads would be good though.

I can't seem to find many websites that are purely forums without having a main page.

Most websites have a main page, for the love of God we are not in the 90's.

There are many people out there, that won't switch to Xenforo, no matter how better it is, because it simply doesn't have the complete all in one solution.

XenForo is a business company, they want to make money, they want to win the competition ( i guess ), if they want to win the competition, they have to develop a CMS, a Gallery and a Blog system. Period.

It will only bring more customers...you gotta give the customer the CHOICE. If he want's it, he can buy it, if he doesn't he wont. If you don't have it though, he will go to the competitor.

End of story.

XenForo itself could use a CMS as well. They aren't just forums, they have a separate site and it'd be nice to make it all the same system. They already offer pages which aren't forum related and nobody has a problem with that. I'm all for the entire development power going to the forums but I am not opposed to a CMS if they feel it's feasible. It's also not comparable to a blog or gallery system.

All i'm saying is that right now, when somebody want to create a website with forums and maybe some gallery and blogs in the future, to make his business/website feature richer he will say

Xenforo:
✔ Has decent forum system
✘ No Gallery
✘ No CMS for front page and other pages,
✘ No Blogs

Competitor:
✔ Good forum system, not better than xenforo
✔ Gallery
✔ CMS that can help me customize my website with front pages and other pages
✔ Blogs

Though, IF XenForo had more addons, things would have been way more different...

Firstly, I couldn't live with the fact that the developer could abandon, not upgrade/maintain the addon. (its a MAJOR addon, not a minor one, that i wouldn't care if it get broken or stay outdated)

Secondly, XenForo is here to make money, why the heck wouldn't they develop a CMS, that it's 1000% sure that it will sell? Makes no sense...

Thirdly, it will be great use for their on site too

And again, in 2014, no matter HOW good a forum software can be, it's not enough...a CMS with a forum software like XenForo that will have perfect integration and it would be so flexible/customizable it would only boost the sales...seriously....

I think it would be worth XF to move into different areas as at the end of the day, it all compliments the core system, the forum.

The main addon I'd love to see is an equal to IP's Nexus. A complete hub for selling advertising, memberships, store items etc

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the XF dev team smaller than IPS? It seems like a CMS, gallery, and so on would be a lot for the current team to tackle. I wouldn't want efforts in those areas to impact the main forum product.

This is one of the reasons why I'd like to see 2.0 incorporate a well-documented API, it would make it easier for third party devs to incorporate those things.

XF team could get bigger, i don't see any reason not to...if they want to expand...if they want to stay just a forum software company, it's ok.

But then, i don't know any company that's into business that doesn't want to expand...

Fantastic to hear that the boys are carrying on with their winning ethos and not being afraid to do what needs to be done to keep Xenforo the best.
T'internet moves along quickly and you need to keep up.
On the other hand, I will have to contend with broken addons and since we're currently running 67 of them, I am naturally concerned that 2.0 will be expensive. I have faith that the developers will get plenty of notice of the work they will need to do to reproduce the addons.
67 will come down by a few when we upgrade to 1.4, at least.
CMS? I think most big forums benefit from some kind of aggregation of the latest/popular forum topics. You can't just present the forum list. But then bigger forums will have the resources to make their own site and/or CMS.
When we had blogs on AVForums on vBulletin, they weren't really used. I'm a believer that the core of what engages your members is the forum, and unless addons enhance that experience, then the users aren't particularly interested. Is my experience.
So I hope 2.0 is about keeping new and veteran members engaged in the community. Make it easier, more interesting, more fun to use. If you're adding new functionality, integrate it into the forum experience.
That's my 2p.

Lastest threads and posts (sidebar) in the core should be great. Also current viewer of a thread.
