Initial setup steps:
  1. Install the add-on
  2. Set the Admin permission. Admin CP > Users > Administrators > Your Administrator Account > Manage Xen Media Gallery
  3. Create categories in Admin CP > Applications > Gallery Categories
  4. Set user permissions in Admin CP > Users > User Group Permissions

You're the man dude. Thank you so much for all your help ! Can't wait for the 1.3 now :D

In case you've missed the little tidbits I've posted elsewhere, also confirmed for 1.3:
  • Importers for XFR User Albums and XenMedio
  • Ability to rotate images
  • Albums (private, public and shared [to a list of users] albums)
  • Extra permissions (permissions for tagging, downloading images etc.)
  • The ability to mass edit the category display order numbers in the Admin CP.
  • Tag users in comments (default XF 1.2 @tagging
  • Collapsible categories
  • Unviewed Media count on navigation tab.
More:
  • Permission based ability to set media as avatar. (Permission allows you to use your own media or media by anyone).

Can the pics we choose to be an avatar be chosen from a private album of ours? Thats a feature that was on MySpace and Facebook too.

That's what I'm talking about.

Yes, that's expected in XMG 1.2.X.

XMG 1.3 introduces collapsible categories so you will only see all of the parent categories and only the child categories of the category you're viewing.

Another vote for the Photopost importer (I know it's not coming until after the next major release), but showing interest here as I've been wanting to drop Photopost for years. In fact, the PP gallery is so bad that I've removed it from search engines via robots.txt as I believe it does more harm than good, so I've been painfully waiting for a cool XF-based solution to appear and promote gallery functionality to my users again. Keep up the nice work.
+1. Whichever solid application gets a good importer out first for PP is bound to receive an avalanche of business. Its like users dumping other solutions for XF. PP is the legacy photo gallery champion and since the guys behind it are stuck in an innovation rut, they're ripe for picking. Someone please take my money already!

In what way?

They're completely different so they should not clash.

Or are you wondering if the search terms box will show on media pages?

Great to see the developments coming in 1.3! :D

One question:

Albums (private, public and shared [to a list of users] albums)

Will users be able to share albums with one of the groups on Xenforo?

For example, my site is visible to the public and that's how I'd like media to be shared in general. However, some albums I'd like to restrict to just registered users or even full members (a subset of registered users). Will this be possible to do by selecting the groups? Typing in a list of users from these groups is obviously going to be too long to do.

Thanks. :)

The problem is that usergroups mean absolutely nothing to your users. You could give them a list of Registered, Moderating, Full Members, Administrative etc. and although that means everything to you as a site admin, it means absolutely nothing to them.

So, with that in mind, no, usergroup sharing will never be exposed to the front end for the purposes of albums.

There is an open suggestion for view permissions on site categories though. That would, at least, allow you to create a category that can only be viewed by the groups you specify. But I cannot yet confirm if that will make it into 1.3.

I understand what you're saying here and indeed some groups would mean nothing to users.

So, would there be a way for users to share some user albums with everyone, including guests (I assume this would be the public setting) but share others with just registered members? I'm trying to figure out how this could be done without having to type in a very long list of names or restrict all images and albums to just registered members.

Options like this when creating a user album would be great:

Everyone/Public
Registered Members
Members who you follow
Only Me (Private)
Custom list

Regarding the site categories, I know you have this in mind and this may not come in 1.3. Will categories be used for user albums as well as the current use of them? Or are they two separate things?

Visitors, members and people you follow would probably be worth doing, similar to how the profile privacy options work.
