Why redirect is needed when moving threads?

When I move threads from one forum to other, it asks whether it asks for 3 options.

• Do not leave a redirect
• Leave a permanent redirect
• Leave a redirect that expires after

If I select any of that redirect options, it creates new thread id and add related redirection. But, in the front-end it always prepares the URLs using old thread id.

So, what is the need of redirection here, if we're not going to prepare URL of thread using new thread id?

Often the member that created the thread will check the forum looking for the thread, the redirect helps them find it. I like to have the redirect expire in an hour.
