The XenForo 1.1 'warning' system allows board staff to handle trouble-making users in a structured and manageable way.

Update, October 15 2011:
I've made some changes and improvements...

I really like the combination of predefined warning and actions with the flexibility to dynamically change them as the case warrants. A well conceived system. Thanks again for delivering the kind of high-quality development we've become so spoiled in expecting.

This looks great, but I'm just wondering is there a way for the mod team to still see the report button?
We use that as a way to discuss borderline posts before deciding to warn them...

Global moderators will see the Warn link everywhere.

Content moderators will see Warn for the forums they are responsible for, Report elsewhere.

I thought I'd post a little update - in response to requests and suggestions made here, I've made some changes to the warning handler.

The UI is now a little more manageable

You can now lock conversations when they are sent, and allow or prevent the recipient from adding extra users to the conversation

And there are now controls to allow the content to be (soft) deleted right from the warning UI.

Will we also be able to edit Public Warnings after they have been made? (http://xenforo.com/community/threads/edit-public-post-warnings.21250/)

Outstanding! Thank you! (y)

If you are taking requests...

1) Would it be possible to edit the Warning, in addition to deleting it? Specifically: be able to remove or modify the 'effects' of the warning but leave the Warning in place which has the link to the content which received the warning & moderator notes that were in the Warning.

Being able to edit the Notes the moderator typed in would also be fantastic (an additional warning for added text is not possible because content can only be Warned once).

  • I defined a "Moderate User" Warning that simply give them an additional user group with the "Follow Message Moderation Rules" set to Never - that never expires because some people can take hours, days, or even weeks before they calm down. Completely unpredictable.
  • I gave my test user that Warning - but the only way to allow that test account to post unmoderated again is to delete that warning. It would be fantastic to somehow edit the warning so that account could post, but leave the history of what had happened.
  • And of course being able to edit the Notes the moderator typed in would be tremendous (y)
2) Would it be possible to have finer granularity in the length of time a warning exists? Specifically - could 'Hours' be in the drop down menu in addition to Days/Weeks/Months/Years?

i can see where to fiddle with the individual warnings in acp, but where are the options such as the total point allotment and so on?

there is no option/perm page where i can set options such as 'mods cant edit message', 'mods cant personalise public warning' and so on?
when issuing the warning is there no way for mods to have a choice to 'apply points y/n' outside of giving them carte blanche to enter any number of points they wish? is there no way to make the auto conversation non-editable by the moderator?
there are certain aspects of peplac infraction system that i really wish were present here. a simple tickbox at infraction time to either warn or infract. a highly visible public notification that serves as a deterrent, with {issued by} and {infraction #}. predefined pms that cannot be altered by moderators.
as is, this is giving moderators way too much freedom to create drama for me. i keep mods on a very short lead, and the more i play with this the less workable it seems.

I agree that having a user group permission for the "custom" warnings is pretty important. You don't necessarily want all mods (or anyone in some cases) to be able to give arbitrary warnings that the admins have not allowed. Having specific warnings for specific amounts of time take the subjectiveness out of it and can prevent some users being unfairly warned (which could turn into a ban) for a long amount of time because the mod was in a bad mood that day.

Suggestion

I would combine "report" and "warn". They both represent "doing something with the post on a moderating level". One delegates the content-management to the team (report) while the other link directly manages with the content or at least with the author (warn).

I agree.

Not being able to report posts for discussion amongst the staff is a slight issue now.

We've resorted to copying & pasting links in the admin forum, whereas before it was a case of just clicking Report and writing a comment.

Reported posts should make up a thread in a special forum with permissions of "see own threads only". This is great for my community. I also ask my users to create threads there if they need help.

Suggestion: Mods see the moderating tabs on the "report" popup. Remove "warn" link.

My staff and I prefer the reported post forum setup. We found it much easier to discuss reported posts in a forum rather than in the report center. I don't use the report center other than to click resolved to clear the alert.

An option to use a forum would be most welcome.

Agreed - with CycleChat we had better communication in vB3 when reports went into the private mods forum as new threads. It's a very natural process because it's the same as all the other interaction/posting you do on the forums.

No need to take ownership or alter a status or deal with the limited functionality that is the report centre idea.

We lost the "tightness" of the modding team when we moved to IPB and had to use the Report Centre. Some of them still don't bother with it even now (14 months in!!).

It would be great if you could nominate a forum for the reports to go to. (y)

Better still post a summary of the Warning issued and any Warning Action that results.

THAT would be a fantastic addition to the system ... nominate forum for reports, nominate forum for warnings, nominate forum for warning actions ... yyeeesss pppleeeaaasseee .... (y)

Cheers,
Shaun :D

Incredibly insightful discussion (y)

When my forum was using vb3.8 we had a discussion thread started in the moderators forum when there was a Reported post. Problem is - many many times there was little feedback and I had no assurance that the other moderators ever saw the thread. Much time was spent literally begging for input regarding things I knew nothing about... so I would say for us, definitely not ideal.

The Report center in xf is really good but not perfect.
  • There is no way to know if there is new content in the reports. Often times when I see and open report with Mike/Kier/Brogan online I assume that they are dealing with the issue - but yesterday I found a request for me by accident. Possibly an alert to all staff for new content in the Reports?
  • There is no way to find the member <-> reported content correlation. Ideally there would be a link from a users profile to all content that person created that was reported (both open and closed reports).
  • Ideally there could be a link to all content that user reported to see if someone is abusing the Report function (then possibly a Warning for that :D)
  • The Reports cannot be searched. Ideally that could be arranged.

But all those things are not directly related to the Warning system, which seems nice enough to me with a few adjustments.

EDIT: The ability for moderators to always be able to Report posts really needs to be there.
Moderators see the Warn link -> deals with the content directly, which is immediately associated with the user from their profile.
Non-moderators see the Report link -> makes a reported post, which can be dealt with by any of the proper moderators.

But ideally some adjustments could be made to the incredibly well designed Warning system (see earlier requests).
