Please make sure, that the IQ is not affected by this. So far my experience with lightboxes is, that the image quality of the originally uploaded image is getting worse when using it. My users are very sensitive to this. They use specifically the right pixel size and KB size and all kind of photoshop tricks to achieve the best IQ for presenting their images in the gallery. If this destroys their efforts, they will be all over me...

XenGallery never uses original photos to show up. That was designed from the beginning. It uses resized photo which has the same quality as original one.

It is not excellent. It used to be that way. Each photo/album item would have different size and your widget is not look good.

you could use kind of gridlines so that each album has the same "space" but within that space the images take different sizes depending on landscape or portait orientation. I ra several photo communities and I can guarantee you that all my users will prefer the whole image in the thumbnail instead of crops. No photographer will appreciate crops in thumbnails.

You think the thumbnails are being cropped? They are not being cropped. In 1.1.0 it will be improved for the widget. They cannot keep the original size, that makes widget look bad.
