Would it be possible to edit the portal to have a slideshow at the top of the page & a Most Recent article list? Like a list like this,

Simple Portal doesn't provide any widgets, but you can use bdwidget framework http://xenforo.com/community/members/extralicense.45340/ to include widgets on the portal pages (ATM you'll have to include the template hooks yourself.

We've included dozen new template hooks for simple portal 1.1, but we want to wait for xenforo 1.2 to see if we can use the new template merge system and the new template callbacks for this.

=> Simple Portal 1.1 will require XenForo 1.2!

OK finally installed - had to UPGRADE XF ugh! gave admins (me) permission to promote.
Now I'm stuck. can;t see anything different about my threads - thread tools, or on the page anywhere.

Also I now realise it only promotes a THREAD. But there is a constant flow of new threads so how am I to keep up? I need it to promote from a forum so eg our news forum promotes its latest new thread starter. Or a topic forum ditto.
But individual threads come and go quite fast.

The ability to auto-promote threads from a specified forum is being considered for future versions.

Are you saying you don't have "Portal Page Options" in the thread tools?

@goblues thank you I will URGENTLY await forum promotion - please put as high a priority on this as you can.
It would be good to have this as the thread starter - a post with something like - Wow! - / - Me too - / :) is not what is required!

No my Thread Tools dropdown has not changed.
My XF update done in order to install your SP, has many outdated templates which I'm not tackling yet so maybe this why. Which one has Thread Tools on it? I could look at that one now.

ps making this optional would be good i.e. admin option to set the promotions for a box to
- thread, as now;
- forum, on thread starters;
- forum, latest post on any thread.

make sure, that template hook thread_view_tools_links exists inside your thread_view template

Thank you yes that hook had been deleted - not by me because I never delete I only comment out. All is Ok now.

I'm still having trouble working out how to use it - finding threads to promote. I found one but now I find it's displaying only the first post from a long time ago. Can I make it show the latest post instead?

What I find desirable is to promote 4 things:
A Post /Featured Item - I select a specific POST to promote, which just stays there until I change it. It would give a link to its thread for read more.
Thread 1 - Like now, the first post - useful for a Help thread, with brief tips/ links for newcomers.
Thread 2 - I want a thread to display its latest post so the date is recent, and it changes automatically. Good for newsy threads, in depth discussion.
A Forum - I want a forum to display its latest starter thread, so that too is (fairly) recent and updates automatically when content is added to the forum.
This way I can almost leave the homepage to run itself. But perhaps this does not suit your plans.

That's how the current version works!

Yes sorry I do understand that. I just assumed that as it's the front page where you want to show mostly latest stuff, it would display the latest post.

To me the problem is this. Under the current system, if I select a thread to promote it's either a longer thread or a short, ephemeral (short lived) thread.

If it's a long thread then the first post could go back to 2008 or earlier! Which doesn't relate much to visitors now except in a few unusual cases like a newcomer welcome, tips, links post. So mainly I'd prefer latest post on a thread
If it's not long, recently started, the chances are it'll be replaced by other more current discussions in that forum area within a week. A thread in a forum moves down whats new every few hours.
I don't really want to do a daily or weekly job of manually editing this.

I wouldn't mind doing a monthly duty tweak on which threads are selected depending how they are working out. But really I want it to mostly run automatically.
Promoting a selected featured post is fine because I read almost everything - it's a small board and I don't have mods. I might do one of these 'featured' every week, just one edit. Or more/ less often depending how busy I am and how much especially good material we have currently.

Dont know if I'm making sense. It's all about keeping it fresh and lively without me having to do anything to maintain it more than monthly, unless I see a really good item to Feature which would normally be about every 3 days to a week. But I don't want to feel responsible for fining 4, 5 or 6 of these every week to keep it interesting.

Sorry, no time frame. We're following xenforo with "it's ready, when it's ready".
We're a small team with many already released projects (and many more in the pipeline ;) )

For 1.1 we tagged:
  • Resource Support (finished)
  • Post Support
  • Portal Items RSS Feed (finished)
  • Better [bd]Widget Framework Support (finished)
  • new secret feature

Woo!!! My requested RSS feed feature has been added! Great job Dan! (y)

Oh great so Post Support is in the plan - yes Ive read all this thread as it happenend always been interested but cant remember all its info. (That kind of roadmap would be cool added to the Overview.)
Fantastic.

With Resource support already here I don't need first post of a thread as it's better to make a Resource tutorial for longer term info.

That leaves Thread: latest post; and Forum: latest starter post.
I don't know if you fancy adding these options.
I'd have thought Thread: latest post is a moderate twiddle on the current Thread: first post, but then maybe I'm sounding ignorant, old, blond and nuts, only one of which I am!

Any idea when? Was testing this, and when abled it doesn't re-route the forums correctly (you basically just get stuck on the portal page)

Correct. Not 1.2 beta 1 compatible, nor will it be. Will probably not update this until at least RC, or at least a bit further into the beta phase.
