Add-on Simple Portal

Looking terrific, especially how the top article is across both columns. Can we set how many (eg. top 2 across, etc.)?
Agree with others about the ability of having the categories elsewhere as they do leave a lot of wasted space below, especially when you start to have 15-20 appearing on the portal. I really like the method used by http://xenforo.com/community/resources/thread-prefix-listing.80/ to present and allow selection of prefixes - perhaps similar for the portal?

I would like to keep the top double space for an include template I edit myself - like a Notice which might be both text and pictures - possible?

Or use the top space to insert a main site headline and landing page area to capture leads with the content categories underneath.

Looking great !!

Simple and effective.

One small thing ...

Why did you choose to put the categories on the left ?
Reminds me of this - http://xenforo.com/community/help/
How about on the right as an option ? (or on the top in a tag layout).
I want people to read the article titles first .... and then think about categories later. Return visitors will want to read the newest articles (as they will already know the categories) .. so putting the categories (usually a small number) in it's own column taking up the most valuable screen real estate (the left side) seems obtrusive.

It might be just me who dislikes the categories on the left. It is a small point anyway. Anyone else dislike categories on the left ? I find it extra "obtrusive" on a home page type thing. Please don't get me wrong ... I love the categories :)

Q; is there some sort of native Xenforo support for your category structure (it looks the same as help) ?

Q: Would it be hard to support widget framework ? Alot of people already have it installed. People think it's efficient and well coded.

I'm sure people will want to add widgets.

Hey wasn't I the person who told you to get something simple out first ! :)
hehe.

It would be nice to be able to put this category list in a sidebar widget, so as to save space and allow more room for content. Is there a way to turn these category tabs off?

You can use [bd] Widget Framework on any pages rendered by any add-on. However, add-on support is still needed and will make the add-on sidebar blocks available in across the forums.
I think supporting widget framework would be a smart option.
xfrocks said it should be relatively easy.

1. WOuldn't this require a second xenforo license? Is it really worth for a simple portal/landingpage?

2. Not sure because of the session. How should this work without any extra SSO Addon?

1) I don't thinkso. Will confirm though...

2) Not sure :)

Adding modules by using php and HTML would be good without having to upload XML files.
Also any ETA on when this may be released?

Great, I am having a custom style done, and I want it made revolving this portal instead of xenporta.

Sorry for the delay. We've run into some styling issues with custom styles, which should be fixed now.
We're searching for 1,2 boards with custom styles to test the portal.

Still wanting to test this? http://xenforo.com/community/conversations/add?to=ExtraLicense ;)

Ooo! Ooo! :D

We're not planning to introduce another widget/sidebarblock/module system. There are already too many (In a perfect world, xenforo would handle this:( )
You'll always be able to use the Widgetframework and show the widgets in the right sidebar

Good luck with this.

It looks interesting but it's not what I'm after so my search continues.

The main reason for this is I want it show things like my server status on the front page in the middle. Obviously something like this would not fit on the side module...well if it did it would look really ugly.

Code:
</br>
<center><a href="http://www.gametracker.com/server_info/66.151.138.51:27015/" target="_blank"><img src="http://cache.www.gametracker.com/server_info/66.151.138.51:27015/b_560_95_1.png" border="0" width="560" height="95" alt=""/></a></center>
</br>

</br>
<center><a href="http://www.gametracker.com/server_info/66.151.138.65:27015/" target="_blank"><img src="http://cache.www.gametracker.com/server_info/66.151.138.65:27015/b_560_95_1.png" border="0" width="560" height="95" alt=""/></a></center>
</br>
<center><a href="http://www.gametracker.com/server_info/74.91.117.23:27015/" target="_blank"><img src="http://cache.www.gametracker.com/server_info/74.91.117.23:27015/b_560_95_1.png" border="0" width="560" height="95" alt=""/></a></center>
</br>

Wish there was something closer to vBadvanced...as far as adding some modules.

What is lacking in Xenporta that you still need?

These three are important for me, and stop me from using Xenporta as a final solution:

1. Better layout for the frontpage, making it look less like a portal, and more like a news/magazine.

2. My forums have active language sections. These are basically subforums which are designated for a language. At the moment people write articles in various sub-forums in each language section. -- Wordpress and Drupal allow for translations of content. - This is not a mere Google translate add on! But allowing our members to translate content.

3. Taxonomy, filtering ability on content type. Drupal is strongest in this regard.

4. You may not agree with this, but users are quite picky, they do not regard Forum Posts as being as high value as a "real" webpage. In my experience, people are much more willing to Share a nice, simple page on FB, than a forum post. This is even when the content is the same. -

Looks promising.

The only thing I don't think looks right is the left side category navigation. Reminds me and looks awfully like the help areas.

Agreed Shelley.

Could it have the option to include this in the right side sidebar?
We can hack it but better if you do it because of anything elase depends on it.

I make a lot of use of my sidebars so I want my users to feel comfortable that the sidebar is reliably on the right offering navigation.
