No, the demand for them is almost non existent. There have only been half a dozen individual requests in 3 years and all of them have had custom importers built for them because they each have had a lot of customization to their vB addons that needed to be taken into consideration.

Is there a code-base available to work with to facilitate the development of a custom importer?

I plan on importing my VB Pro Garage into XMG albums and wrote an importer for it which is based on an exising XMG importer. It probably would not be to hard to extend it to create showcase entries if I could base it on some existing code. Thanks.

Just the addon itself. If you wrote one for XMG, you won't have any problems writing one for Showcase. Send me an inbox for more details.
 
So before i purchase this i have a few questions. This will be used as a review system. To be exact it will be used to review locations (or something very similar to location (new york, miami, las vegas)) ect.
My questions are:
1) Can i import a database i have in excel into this for example in excel i have three (3) columns (Name, State, Country). Would it at all be possible to import this where the Country would turn into a Category, the State would be in the description and the Name would be in the Item Name?

2) Would it at all be possible that the home page of the Showcase is the categories section. Meaning when someone goes to the home page of the showcase they would see a list of all the countries, from where they would be able to choose a country, then the next page would list all the names of the locations and then reviews of those locations.

If this doesnt make sense please let me know and i will try to explain it a little better.

There is no import functionality of any kind, so you would need to develop a custom importer (or have one developed for you).

This would require custom development as it can't be done via template edits (it would take some tweaking of the existing code in the index controller along with some additional code). It is doable tho (if you know what you are doing).

I have a very small requirement.

I want to have a staff bio page. What I have in mind is this

1. Show small blocks just like this - http://poetrycircle.com/forum/showcase/ - each card will have member pic with their real name below, but also have a small 50 word description below the name(not just as a hover).
2. The name should be a clickable link which upon clicking will open the profile window. (this is not important but if it can be done, great)

Possible with the default showcase addon?

That block has more display data, its just disabled. It displays, Title, Ratings, Views and Description. It can also be easily modified (has its own template and css template). Any data that is displayed on the Item Page itself is exposed and can be used in Blocks (to include custom fields)

Actually I only want the blocks page. I only want the staff real name, pic and 50 word bio for each item on that same blocks page - thats it. So need just the blocks page.

I suppose 'item 'page' is the page dedicated to each item and is the destination when you click on the items. I do not want that item page shown. Instead I would want the member card displayed when the item is clicked. I am intending to use 'Showase" to get just the blocks page displayed.

Is it mandatory to have the individual item pages displayed?

This is definitely not the addon you need for what you are wanting to do.

But I dont think there is any other addon that does it. I have over 30 founding members that I want to flatter with 'founder listing' displayed as blocks.

I do agree that showcase is an overkill, but it seems like it can do this small task efficiently. Do you disagree?

Pl advice.

You can do it with Xen Media Gallery too, I would never recommend it tho. Its WAY overkill. Its going to take you more time to disable/modify/customize than it would to develop a simple addon from scratch. Surely there are upcoming developers like @SneakyDave that would benefit from developing something like this for you.

You'd have to contact Nick as he did all of his customization on his own (with some coaching from me). Google Map integration will be available at some point, I just don't know WHEN as I am in the middle of a huge update already (feature frozen). It won't be until after SC 2.3.0.
 
You can do all the same like in the RM and much more.
It´s cheaper and better, try it and enjoy yourself :)
