This is XenForoWe, the community have some time ahead of us to build up plugins and mods and translations, right here where the community is already based. Modders will be providing their mods to the license holders. After a year (and a bit) or so, those who haven't extended their license will do so in order that they can access the downloads available. I can let you know that all current license holders have a license that will not expire within the next year

Bit of a strange policy, in my opinion.
Perhaps another site dedicated to modifications is needed, one which isn't tied to an active subscription.
There most likely are a ton of those up or planned already.
the more i think about it, the less happy i am about this. if the product really is that great and k&m do plan on regularly updating and extending, it would stand to reason that punitive 'reactivation' fees arent needed. locking me out of the licenced forums and cutting me off from even updating mods such when my subscription lapses... well not even ib do that.
having second thoughts about xf and considering cancelling before the paypal goes through.
I get the feeling I will renew yearly but the part about not having access to modifications is a bit of a let-down for modification authors and people who wish to use these modifications.
I must also wonder what's to stop multiple license holders just keeping one license active and then applying all updates from that 1 license to all of their licenses?
I don't see why in the world there's a 189 post discussion on this topic! Renewal fee of $40 is nothing, skip your trips to Starbucks for 2 weeks.
One idea that could be considered is it's prorated from how long you have it, first year is 40, second is 35/30, third is 25/20 until a certain limit. It'd reward the folks who have stuck with the board for quite some time but still bring in come income as well.
What about multiple license holders? Say if I had 5 licenses...
oh I guess I better skip trips to starbucks and my local grocery store and skip off the soap and shampoo too![]()

Hmm.. $40 is nothing... then you have the idea of 40> 35>30>25>20 to a certain limit...
So, you would accept that???
Its all well and good people coming on here and saying "avoid your starbucks trip, its only $40", I dont need to avoid anything. Ive got the money sitting in the bank to renew. The difference being, I want to renew when I want to renew, not when im told too in fear of being landed with a penalty.
Plus Paul has made a very valid point about modifications. So your now saying that even if you dont want to upgrade, if you want access to the modification and support for those modifications, you also need to pay $40.
Im always more willing to do things off my own back, not when im being forced to do things.
Let the customers paying their $40 when they want to, could be a super extra incentive to retain clients. The going down on price is just an extra incentive to retain clients.
That's like stating you want to pay your credit card bill when you choose to and not the actual due date. These guys are extending a service to you and are asking for a small charge at a certain due date to keep up with maintenance which you do have a 9 month grace period! Also the starbucks was just an observation as I work in banking and folks complain about a fee they just got when I see 10 starbuck trips made in the past week. It really comes down to priorities, getting into owning a forum unless you're using a free software you will be expected to shove out some cost.
