XF 2.3 Number of files on host

Two days ago, the hosting company for the forum I run sent me an automated e-mail to say that:
The account currently uses 90.46% (180,921/200,000) of its available files.

OK, fine, let me investigate that to see if I need to upgrade the hosting package. The only files I really control in this respect are the attachments, and there’s close to 61,000 of those. So what is the other two-thirds of the files? There’s nothing else being hosted other than the XenForo forum, but I find it hard to believe that needs 120,000 files all for itself.

Yesterday, another message arrived, saying I’m using 179,420 files. That’s about 1500 less than a day earlier, when the only thing that actively happened is a few tens of newly uploaded files. And another this morning, that I’m using 185,246 files — 6000 more than yesterday, again after only a few tens of new attachments.

I’m sure there’s all kinds of behind the scenes things happening, caches and whatnot, but these fluctuations seem odd to me anyway. Tracking down where all these files are is also not helped by the file browser, that the hosting company provides, not showing the number of files in the directories.

Anybody know what’s going on here?

check your Proxy images and oEmbed media cache settings. these are tiny files that are created on the server which can be disabled or have very short life. on the server, check the folders in internal_data directory image_cache and oembed_cache. apart from that each member profile also has multiple files in different sizes and a lot other things.
