New editor copy/ paste

When I copy and paste text in the new editor it forces a new line.

This is very inconvenient as intuitively I am pasting text where I want it!
Mostly I am trying to paste on the same line where my pointer is. This now seems impossible to do.

Is this as intended?

It seems to be OK if I paste from a word doc/ outside.
It's if I move text around within the edit box.

Steps to reproduce:
  1. Copy some existing text in the editor window
  2. Paste it into an existing sentence
Where you would normally expect the pre- and post- parts of the target text to join the pasted text and form a single line, they don't - a newline is inserted before and after the pasted text.

Visual example:

This is very inconvenient as intuitively I am pasting text where I want it!
Mostly I am trying to paste on the same line where my pointer is. This now seems impossible to do.

... now I post some text into that same block of text:
