Google result for xf community looks like this:
(description for site is same as the description for the most active forum on xf)

Does xf have a 'meta description' box in its backend so we can write what needs to be shown in the result instead of Google choosing what lines to show? We can have this under SEO settings for xF. :)

I would have to assume so because the real description is
    Forum software by XenForo

but google is picking it from the content on the page because the homepage has that same description.

Given the URL that's for, it's just picking up the content of the page. The individual forums will get a meta description of their, well, description. Threads get a description that's a snippet of the first post on the page.
