Impossible to start reading unread thread from first post

I like the 4 months setting for the read age, but if your board is very big it could cause problems.

I do find in interesting that people have not complained yet. I have been surfing a few boards that converted to see what their complaints were, and I also not once seen anyone complain on it.

Of course maybe they just got frustrated and found a different forum.

I doubt that. Leaving a board because you get the content you haven't read yet

im not sure why they arent complaining either. i was expecting it. i have gotten some complaints, primarily about the lack of an ignore function and mobile theme, but not a single comment at all about this particular issue. i reckon its down to the 4 month setting. im pretty sure im going to get negative feedback when all their threads start getting marked read. but then i have to wonder if people arent already marking their own threads as read, and why they arent complaining?

No it would be for the frustration of everytime you as a new member clicks on a thread title it doe snot take you to the first page. If a board frustrates a person they will leave. If you can educate them thats great. How many times have you quit going to a particualr website becuase of pop-ups or something annoying. I can see that some people would be frustrated by that. This board alone has people that dislike it.

That's strange though, because I have the opposite. I don't post on others their boards where they constantly load the first post or just jump to random page and I go 'where the hell am i' .. oh well :)

My only concern is for people that newly register as members and try to browse forums that are older than 28 days. When they click on the title it will not take them to the first post.

Other than this, I love the first unread post. Until XenForo spreads and is very commonly used, people will not know that they have to click on the timestamp in order to see the first thread.

I believe XenForo is an awesome forum software, and the more I use this forum I continue to find new things that I like about it. My only problem is what I stated above.

Now that I been using XenForo daily I find it very irritating when I visit a non XenForo based forum and clicking the thread title takes me to the first post. New users to XenForo based forums will adapt pretty quickly due to the simplicity of the UI, and they too will start finding certain aspects of other forum solutions just as irritating as I do now (and cumbersome).

I still plan to change the thread link to start at post #1, and have a little icon or button which takes you to newest unread.

is that how it will work? if so, thats terrible.
i had assumed the 28 days was a per user thing, meaning this could never happen to a person until they had been a member 28 days. i hope this is the case.

It's adjustable in the ACP: Options -> Threads, Discussions and Conversations: Read Marking Data Lifetime (Days)

First i loved this feature, but now i hate it.
It's impossible to see the first page of a thread, if you visited it already.
You have to go to page X, and click there the pagination.

Why not show the 1. page also in the pagination instead of the last 3?

yes, i understand this. but daniel is saying that if a user registers on day 26 of the boards life, two days later all his old threads will be marked read, and anyone that joins after the 28 days will never click the thread link on old threads and land on page one.
now i have mine set to 4 months and havent had the read issue happen yet (i am dreading it though), but i have to think that surely that scenario is not the case.

does 28 days apply to the user? or to the thread?
