GIPHY may start charging for the use of their API so going forwards we will consider Tenor as either an outright replacement for GIPHY or an optional alternative to it.

The nuts thing is that GIPHY it literally just a host for stuff other people made. They don't own the shows/media the gifs are from nor did they make them. They're literally just a tagging/search system that anyone could make.

Several memes actually have trademarks related to them... Normally not by the people who made the meme.
