I feel the difference between bold thread titles and non-bold thread titles is enough to distinguish between threads that have new/unread posts in them. I would stop using the "star" image (
list-item-new.png
) for this purpose, and consider using it for a new purpose-- to designate "hot" threads (threads with lots of recent activity), like vB3 did with the normally blue thread icon to an orangish color. (

That looks better, referring to the placement though I thought nicks mockup of the green indicator was a nice colour to use to break out this area. Preference I suppose. :)

I think this looks great, and in the middle or at the top, is fine with me. I get the impression the majority likes it in line with the thread title.

In a glance from a distance, even when I can't read the text, talking for my personal situation here, I can see which one to click perhaps that is unread. Moving in makes me read the title, before choosing to click on it. This lets me focus on the content, while my brain handles the UI.

The position is fixed, so you don't have to search; easy to see the filled in spots.

And since it's a template thing, easy to remove too, and easy to make brighter blue or black or green or animated, etc.

I would recommend changing the image.

It looks like a badly resized .gif at the moment with slightly raggy edges and no way matches the quality of the rest of the site.

I would also go with the green as it denotes new better than blue.

Didn't you just say you wanted green to represent a thread in which you had posted?

Sorry, no.
I just thought it was green the first time I saw it - slight colour blindness.

My suggestion was to use 2 different colours for a)new posts and b)new posts in threads you have posted in.

No idea which for which though.

I thought the majority wanted the bubble icon floated to the right as you've posted and green bullet for new. *getting confused*

no bullets, only the bubble ... :) however the better way (IMO) was something around the tiny avatar ...

Personally:
  • Green dot with bold text for threads with new posts
  • Current justification works great, no dot with no new posts in thread list
  • Balloon on right hand side indicating that you made a post in the thread
  • When clicking on the balloon, it takes you to the last post you made in the thread
In addition it would also be great to have indication if a thread is watched, even if you had not made a post in a thread.

The color is fine to me, what does bother me is that the edges, as mentioned, look ragged and are darker than the rest of the icon, which makes it look low quality. :) Also, if it was 1-3 pixels lower that would be excellent. Right now it looks a bit high compared to the thread title. :)

I have do take issue with this one - the implication from this placement is that Enigma (the thread starter) has made a new post, which is incorrect.

Personally, I'd like to drop the 'new' icon completely and revert to what I had originally, where the bold title is the indicator of the discussion containing new messages.

the same can be said about the multiple page links...
t-pages.png

one may read it as ... Enigma has 11, 12, 13 pages of posts?? or 3 pages with the labels 11, 12, 13 :)
others may read it as ... what the heck is an Enigma?? :D

I was thinking that you were not set on the bubble yet nor having a "new" icon.

I'd use a circle (12*12) - check mark inside if posted into; change color if closed; another color if not posted into

if Hot change to another icon - apply same color; if posted into keep the circle change to red
