[DBTech] DragonByte Social Groups [Paid] 2.2.3

No permission to buy (€19.95)
OOoooo!!! I cannot wait to make the switch. I need to read more, I really hope this add-on does not lump the group forums into the regular XF forums. Nothing worse than seeing group forums in the regular forums list.. grrrr!

Oh.. was there ever the decision to allow group owners to have a custom URL for their group, assigned by the group owner?

You can, if you want, add a node to your forum list which will show the social groups the viewing user has joined:
1728910040986.webp

1728910073267.webp
If that node is not added, there is nothing added to your forum list :)

Currently there is no such feature. I'm not sure if I'd want to add it tbh, as it can cause quite a number of issues.

First of all, it can cause old social group URLs to become invalid, in the same way old node URLs become invalid if you change their slug.

Secondly, it can cause friction if groups start "competing" for the more valuable slugs. Groups adding slugs that aren't necessarily relevant for their own group, just to "block" others from using it.

That being said, if @CallingHome sees value in the feature despite these concerns, it will be added :)

DragonByte Tech updated [DBTech] DragonByte Social Groups with a new update entry:

2.2.0

Update highlights

This version focuses almost entirely on importing; it's now possible to import forum threads to Social Groups, and you can now import from [OzzModz] Social Groups!
Importing threads to social groups requires both a new permission, as well as the "Copy thread" permission on the source forum(s).

Furthermore, a few bugs and other issues have been resolved.

DragonByte Tech updated [DBTech] DragonByte Social Groups with a new update entry:

2.2.0 Patch Level 1

Update highlights

This version fixes an issue where attachments imported from forum threads would be invisible. All attachments were indeed imported, so no further action will be needed other than upgrading to this version if you were an early adopter of v2.2.0 and already imported some threads.

Fix: Fix attach_count not transferring when importing forum threads to Social Groups

This is one of the best add-ons I've ever bought. It's easy to setup, easy to manage, and fixes are addressed quickly.

It's also one of the most powerful. And forums already were an incredibly versatile powerful communications format. The only thing I can say against this add-on is that for many small forums, it may be kinda TOO much. Specifically, it may pull activity away from the main forums and it increases moderation load. But that's not the fault of DBT at all. It's just the nature of any social group add-on.

DragonByte Tech updated [DBTech] DragonByte Social Groups with a new update entry:

2.2.1

Update highlights

This version reworks how the thread import is handled, now relegating it to a background process. For smaller threads, this should have no real noticeable impact compared to v2.2.0, but for large forums thread import should now actually work without just crashing after the PHP timeout limit is reached.

A couple other issues have also been resolved, see the full changelog for more information.

Snogs Social Groups is disabled on my XF 2.3 site as it doesn't work. Long shot, would I be able to import groups from a disabled add on? Would it work if I enabled it and then disabled right after the import?

It doesn’t need to be enabled to work, just needs to be installed in the same database :)

What about a resources section for groups? The nobita guy has this. If you’re doing an import from his addon, what will happen to the resources? Would love to see a resource section in groups.

I can look into it for a future version, I’ve no idea what would happen to those resources at the moment. Presumably they would just become normal public resources.

Out of curiosity, what made you switch exactly?
Snog’s add-on is still not 2.3 compatible (at least not as of a month ago) so myself and many other waited for months posting here and on his site asking for an ETA. Then he announced he’s retiring from dev work, so I started looking at others.

Somebody has since taken over Snog’s add-on business and is working to update his hundreds of add-ons but I was already converted.
