XF 1.5 Attachment thumbnails not displaying

We're on the verge of upgrading to 2.1.9 very soon (in the next week or two), and I wanted to fix this recent persistent problem.



I don't know when this happened, but the thumbnails only are not displaying. Attachments display with no issues.

We've had the same directory permissions (777 or 666 on data and internal_data, and on all files and subdirectories) since setting up XenForo back in 2012. I am also using the default htaccess file, adding only php_value and php_flag directives as needed by our server.

Clicking the attachment also loads the full image properly.

I have a feeling I am missing something very obvious, but after looking at this a few times now, I'm not seeing it. A similar thread here mentioned an issue with htaccess, but that wasn't the issue here since I rarely ever change htaccess.

Any ideas where to start looking?

Does the thumbnail physically exist on the server in the data directory?

If it does, then it can only be a perms issue, or some sort of database issue - inspecting the tables will rule out the latter.

Aaah, I dug around and finally found it--there was an old htaccess file buried in a subdirectory restricting hotlinking to image files that was using the old http URLs vs. https.

So one of my hunches was correct--this happened when we converted the server over to SSL/TLS.

Easy indeed! And I probably missed the blindingly obvious several times over the past six months! If only the upgrade were this easy. (Third party theme, customizations and add-ons, and I'm on a final punch list of a couple dozen items before we cut 'er loose.)
