[8wayRun.Com] XenPorta (Portal)

Status
Not open for further replies.
A few ideas for the Recent Threads module. I apologize if these have been mentioned previously.

Thread title character limit
This could help with visitors using low resolution or small window displays.

Recent Threads in center column
This module works great in the top and bottom sections, but does not collapse well when placed in the center column.

Optional Columns
If someone really wanted to make the module as adaptable as possible, each column (avatar, replies, views, etc) could be made optional.

So that we don't have to go into the ACP for every little thing. Seems quite a bit easier to me.
There should be a Modules link on your navigation when you click on Home.

Like i said though i have disabled it's home button until i can get it up to scratch, so there is no other link, like at all?!

A few ideas for the Recent Threads module

Thread title character limit
The portal is designed to work automatically, without the need for manual intervention. A thread's title automatically wraps if there are too many characters to fit on a given line. This operation makes sense. Each user has the option to use different font, font styles, font weight, fixed-width, etc.

Below is a screen shot of my portal's Recent Threads block. You will notice the thrird thread has a very long title which wraps.

XenPorta is my favorite Xenforo addon and I'm only offering suggestions. A limit to the thread title is easy to implement, and would help people who want to put the module in the center column. To see what I'm talking about, put the module in the center and reduce your resolution to 1024. Having a recent thread module for the center column was common with vbulletin based websites, and I'm sure some Xenforo users might want to repeat that. If there is anyone with the skill to make such a mod for XenPorta I'd be willing to make a small donation.

Please forgive me Brad if I am misunderstanding. I take your suggestion as your sincere desire to help make the product better for all of us.

The screenshot I shared is with the block in the center. It is also using a fixed width 1000. I have a second pc right next to my main pc, which I use the 1024 x 768 setting on just to see how my site looks with that resolution. There is zero difference between the image I shared from one I would take from my second pc.

What do you not like? The word wrapping?

Thanks for the quick reply. Your site looks really good; I love what you've done with the background. The problem I see only becomes evident when the module is in the center of a three column fluid layout. Your site only uses two columns.
3 column vbulletin example: http://www.vbadvanced.com/

What I dislike most about the current xenporta recent thread module is the unlimited wrapping or collapsing behavior of the thread title container. Something unique may need to be developed for this case. Under the circumstances described above, a thread title can end up looking like this:
This
is
a
long
sample
thread
title.

Now I understand. I made my site into 3 columns and I agree, it looks awful. But, the Recently Active Threads block was not designed to be used in the center for that very reason. Jaxel just recently created a side block version of the block.

If you wished to use the block in the center I think it would be a custom re-design which, of course, can be done.

Thanks for explaining.

The sole point of this add-on is to add a home page. It seems sound thinking 100% of users who desire to access the modules will have a home tab.

The modules can also be accessed by your site URL /portal/modules. So http://www.gamingonlinux.info/portal/modules should work.

I don't want my website visitors to be greeted by an unfished page on the home button for now, plus that link does not work it would be /chill/po...but still doesn't work?

Hi guys,

were having a slight problem when we want to add more forums to the recent threads module, getting this error:

A user of my forum (Manuel Ruiz Esteve) also had that error (see image).
He has 75 forums and a depth of 3.
Bug?
There is null query error.

The link has to work. Can you offer a full screenshot of what you see? Please include the URL you are using in the shot.

If the link does not take you to the modules section then one of two things is wrong.

1. You get a permissions error, which means you need to go into the ACP and grant the account you are using permissions to administrate XenPorta

2. You get a page not found error, which means you are using the wrong path. The path depends on your "Set Index as Controller" setting for XenPorta in the ACP. If you have it checked (which most people do) then the path would be your site's URL + install directory + /portal/modules.

For the official XF site if they installed XenPorta the path to administrate modules would be http://xenforo.com/community/portal/modules If the "Set Index as Controller" option was chosen then *I think* the path would be http://xenforo.com/community/forum/portal/modules I am not 100% certain on this last part because I don't use that option.

If the path doesn't work the go into the ACP and confirm you have XenPorta installed.

Here are the following things I need out of this product. I know it will do some of what I mention but I don't think it can do all of them. Can it be modded to do the things in my list that it cannot currently do.

1. I would like to be able to have an index of the articles that would be positioned on the left side. If a certain item is clicked on the index only the items I have put in that particular category would be seen on the front page.
I would have to be able to assign each article with a category that shows up on the index.

2. I would like to be able to change the order on the articles fairly easily. Possibly be assigning it an article number.

3. I would like the articles to be in two columns.

Article 1 Article 2
Article 3 Article 4
Article 5 Article 6

4. I would like all the articles to be promoted from a forum thread.

5. I would want to be the only one that can promote a thread to an article.

6. Comments in an article would appear both as a comment to the article and as a post in the thread. Also all posts in the thread would appear as a comment in the article and in the thread.

What parts cannot be done at this time and can those things be done?
