XF 1.4 "You have already completed installation."

I twice uploaded 1.4.3 files and tried upgrading, but I'm getting this error. Please help, as my forum is now inoperable.

You have already completed installation. If you wish to reinstall, please delete the file internal_data/install-lock.php.

Oh no. So, I re-wrote all my files, and now my main page is showing an install option, as if it's a new installation!

Now it's back to the same problems I had before.

Sigh. Still having FTP programs. I think I got it now; it'll just take a while.

I would highly recommend that once you fix this that you set up a test installation of your site.

Then for an upgrades, add-on installations or other changes you do, you do them first on the test site. If there are any problems you then haven't wrecked your main site and you can work out any issues before the live site is touched.

Thank you. Yes, I just came to the same hypothesis. Luckily I believe my local files were all up to date. I merged the files locally this time and am uploading everything now. I'm using Transmit for FTP, and I didn't realize that drag-and-drop replace would replace folders rather than files. This is not the way Finder works on Mac, for instance. Hopefully this works!

When you are uploading files/folders in Transmit, it will actually ask you whenever you want to replace or merge folders, given you haven't changed the settings. You probably hit replace in this case.

To avoid this in future, set Uploading folders to 'Merge the existing folder' in Transmit Preferences -> Transfers tab.
