XF 2.4 general discussion, feedback, complaints, random off topic posts, etc.

We are currently targeting a release between Q4 2024 and Q1 2025.

And:
Our team has long recognized the value of more frequent software updates. While we haven't always met this goal in the past, XenForo 2.4 represents a step towards shorter release cycles. We're aiming to provide updates more regularly, allowing us to deliver improvements and new features in a much more timely fashion. This approach should help us evolve the software more consistently, better addressing the needs of you, our customers, and your users.

I have not found an updated release schedule so they must meet their stated release date...right?

Hopefully but doubtfully lol.

We should come with a petition to XF. “Release what you have!” - then complain it’s not finished and bugged.

Or like a building company who has to pay fines for not delivering on time. 500USD a day until it comes!

In all honesty, I think the XF team shouldn't mention estimated release schedules at all. Because they never meet them.
If you know that - why do you care for the release dates then? If they don't mention estimated release dates some people go mad in the forum. If they mention estimated release dates other people go mad in the forum. Therefor probably the best approach is:

que sera sera
whatever will be, will be
the future's not our's to see
que sera sera

Possibly some day 2.4 will be released and there may be another 2.3.-release in the meantime or not. Does it make your life more miserable if it's not released next week? If not: Why do you care? If it does: Change something about your life.

I knew these replies would pop up and my response to it all is simply...communicate.

We all learn it, especially at work. But it seems real hard to do in practice.

Just keep your customers informed. The 2.4 announcement stated the team would do that but it's...minimal at best.

I'm not just talking about this release but especially 2.3 which took many months longer (or even a year?) than stated.

My guess is you keep both sides happy (or happier at least).

Is that too much to ask?

Ps. What also worries me a bit is that Kier hasn't posted anything in almost a year. I know, he is busy with 3.0 and all but you can't tell me that doesn't make you think something is going on. Again...communicating would help.

I agree that delays could be communicated better. "we're aiming for q1 25"
March 20th: "hit a snag.. X feature took longer than expected, developers were on leave, a last-minute third party dependency has threw a spanner in the works and we need to figure it out.. Etc etc - it may be another month"

But then I also get the point of being quiet - sometimes too much information just encourages a bit too much "feedback" to the point where you'd think some people were involved in the company's personnel appointments and strategic visions.

As for kier he's probably taking a well deserved break from the forward facing roles and letting Chris take the credit and earache! After however many years producing videos and being the liaison - he's probably squirreling away on v3 and enjoying the fruits of his labour and letting someone else get the face time (and headaches). We've got Kier, Chris, Jeremy and Naz now. It's not like we're just running with K&M any more.
@Chris D turn for the grey hair now. He's younger and has it coming 😉

This! They announce they're going to be producing more frequent twice yearly release schedules. Fail! They announce 6 month release windows, and don't meet them. Fail! And without any communication, then it's just one big joke and makes the product and development team appear either like they're in disarray or the business is having major problems.

To me its a bit melodramatic to claim there is no communication. The last HYS was a few weeks ago and the last update on progress was 2 months ago. Communication is there. Yes, another update about where we are would be nice.

But they didn't say anything yesterday...or the day before! 😱

Sometimes there should be more than just HYS posts. That's the whole issue...

I don't see a silver bullet. However, it seems, that less communication + infrequent releases + no release plan keeps the crowd relatively quiet and at the same time leaves the devs their focus on development instead of having to moderate speculations and expectations. ;)
