Also from that announcement:
We are currently targeting a release between Q4 2024 and Q1 2025.
If they are going for Q1 of next year (which could be as late as March), it is really still early. Probably next month at the earliest unless they are really going to drag this out.

Just as well they've been on-time or accurate with forecasted release timings in the last 5 years.

And they own half of the marketshare compared to XF.
Fewer clients, but more revenue per client allows for a bigger team?

I think it’s great that both options exist but one cannot have all the upsides of one without taking into account the downsides.

Yes, Invision puts out far more regular releases but it has the team to do so, and the price to match. It’s easy to say XF should hire another developer to do more regular releases but that would probably entail a raise in the renewal fee to cover it.

New license xenforo: $195
New license IPB: $199

You get so much more for your bucks with IPB.
xenforo does have them beat with renewal fees. IPB is $199 yearly.

I thought the cost of the self hosted licence was $499?

It hasn't been that way for a couple of years. It's $499, $199 yearly renewal and if you don't renew for 2 years the licence is no longer renewable.

It hasn't even been called IPB for a few years, it's been Invision Community for a few now, but the Classic licence gives you everything (it's no longer buy-the-bits-you-want)
