What does this do that's worth 5k?

I think the fact that we paid $5k to Jaxel shows that that those who paid the cash feel that it's worth the money. Whilst other solutions are very good in their own rights, none of them have that feel of a top end homepage and XenPorta achieved that for many people.

All i wanted verion 2 to do that version 1 didnt, was work easily with other plugins.

I frankly thought it looked very generic.. It took tons of post editing to get a promoted page to look right as it had no uniformity built in.. XenForo is very clean XenPorta didnt follow this method and has a very dysfunctional frankenstein look and feel to it..

Omg YES. That's exactly what I felt like while using it!

Do you have an example?

--as in the "feel of a top end homepage", that cannot be replicated with another solution.

By top end, I mean in the sense that it can be made to look more like WordPress/Joomla style solution than I believe is possible with the other solutions. This is very subjective as I'm just a hobbyist, I'm not a coder in any sense of the word. Most of the rest of you guys are.

From my experience, I found working with XenPorta quite straightforward as opposed to trying to get my head around the Widget Framework or Extra Portal. As a layperson I found XP had everthing under one roof which suited me. Where I got stuck was the customisation of the layouts and the ability to have more control over this aspect.

As for examples of what can be done with XenPorta then there's 8wayrun, Linux.org, FalbleHero,FreeStepDodge which to me are as good as my own WP homepage which is all I'm really looking for at the end of the day. I was playing around with XenPorta 1.5 and I managed to make a homepage almost resembling my current WP homepage. The only stumbling block was the inability to customise the look of the recent news block to what I wanted. And the look of the article page too.

If you have any examples of sites that achieve a similar or better effect without XenPorta then please share because I'm waiting to upgrade my site right now and only XP2 is holding me up. If there's a way to do something similar without XP2 then I would be happy to look into it.

I wouldn't say I'm a coder or give me some extravagant title, but I do know, for some odd reason, that Xenporta was more confusing for me than any other addon I've installed, and it looked confusing once installed.

If you say so. Good luck with XenPorta.

Its not a portal. Its a list of threads. At least xenPorta as it is, buggy and nasty of code as it is, offers the ability for categories and changing the look of the threads that are part of a forum you select to give it a more blog oriented look.

Most people want to ditch Wordpress with something like this, not have every thing still look like a forum.

Give it a more "blog oriented" look? Sure it can. The only thing on that front page that WF doesn't have is the slider. The rest can be matched.

You aren't understanding what I am saying. Click on any article on this front page: http://www.crazyengineers.com/

and look at it. It's no longer a traditional thread and has a much more blog like feel to it. We need something more like Wordpress and less like forums for our content / news areas.

I never once talked about what was inside. Only on the landing page. However, a bit of work on FT, I can easily see that attained. Maybe even now with some CSS and a couple template changes... Without the headaches and issues XP brought.

By the time this mythical "XP2" is released, FT will be a better solution. Myself, I see it that way now.

And with some work, you can get that as well.

Yes, with work.. That's the point, the people want a GOOD portal out of the box (which XP 2.0 hopefully will be much closer to be), you know, that most other forum software's have addons for. You can make pretty much make any forum software to look like a portal with some work. That is not what we are walking about.

And have you seen the multitude of issues, no support, and lack of other devs wanting to work at all with XP?

And it can easily be argued it didn't work properly out of the box either.

I remember when Brian from vB Advanced had at one time had expressed interest in building a Portal for XF.. Of course that was years ago and nothing ever materialized.. When i first installed XP way back in the day it was always only supposed to be a stop gap until that CMPS was released. Unfortunately that never happened..

I suspect version 2 will be heads and tails better then V1 but my concern is that Jaxel will wait until the deadline and put another rush job out and again be stuck with some buggy difficult to work with crap.. A little communication would quiet a lot of negative comments here.. As long as that communication does not include "I'll get to it when i bore of my new video game."
