What does this do that's worth 5k?
It's not going to be 5K per license though is it. It'll be something between $50 and $100 I imagine.

Considering that Jaxel said it will be out by the end of the year, we'll say that's $5k for over six months of work. Obviously he isn't going to be working on this 40hrs a week but $5k for several months of work is not a lot at all.I know that, I'm saying $5k just seems like a lot to code an addon and then still charge for it
You should look at the hours, not the months it takes to put those hours in.Considering that Jaxel said it will be out by the end of the year, we'll say that's $5k for over six months of work. I'd be interested to hear how many hours other devs put into their portals. I have a feeling it's under 200. Plus, you can't forget he's going to get sales after release also but then you have to count the hours of support (which it's Jaxel, so you can probably say 0$5k doesn't give too many hours. 250 hours at say $20/hour. That's less than 1 month working full time.

How are you certain that this will do "what is needed"? There's been no feature set revealed. But if their portals did what was needed then this wouldn't have got 5K funding...

And 5k later I'm sure many are unsure if this one will do what they need as there's been a lack communication on what will be included and when it will be available.
I'm not trying to argue with you, but this post below kind of leads into what I'm saying:I'm not at all. You seemed to be saying that less than 200 hours was enough to make a portal like everyone wanted. My point was if that were the case then no one would be funding this but rather using the existing solutions.
XenPorta, currently, isn't -much- different than the other portals. The recode should be possible in under 200 hours. Other protal devs can probably confirm that. Additional features could take up to 40,000 hours, depends on what his plans are... we really have absolutely no idea, now do we?The initial feature set for the first release was always just going to be a rewrite of XenPorta wasn't it? That was my understanding of it.

Nothing! XepPorta2.0 doesn't exist.. Its actually has more in common with the mythical unicorn, then it does Extra Portal as it sits today. What's better in this than whats in extra portal?
To me one of the appeals of a rewrite is that the current XenPorta isn't very intuitive. It's simple enough to set up a recent news block and such, but things like layouts and categories aren't used by many people and I think that's just because they're confusing to implement. While I think this could be helped by writing some kind of user guide or documentation, the current system does really show that many of these features were not here on initial release and were kind of slapped on as the years went by. I can only speak for frontend stuff like this though, I'm sure that Jaxel has a far more significant reason to want to rewrite so much code.I'd have to go back and read it again but I remember thinking it was very vague. A complete rewrite is nice but how exactly will that benefit my site? He wasn't very forthcoming to some of the questions that were asked early on, basically saying he was going to rewrite it and then see about adding some of the requested features. That's precisely the reason I had no interest in contributing. The approach seems to be "wait and see" so my money can wait as well and in the meantime I'll continue looking to see if a solution for my site is possible elsewhere.
